Height of irons

I use: Graphite shafted steelhead clubs
My swingspeed: between 80-90
Ball positions: Middle for all except driver

My low, sand, pitch and 9 iron go high and far, but all my other irons seem to go pretty far but only mid height. To give you an image... my 8 goes only 1/2 as high as my pitching wedge. I think I make pretty solid contact... Could I be doing something wrong?? I've tried swinging more relaxed to very fast but nothing helped much...

David,

Does everything go straight or is their a left to right or right to left movement?

David,

It's good to hear is someone hitting the ball straight!

Your swing should bottom out at the ball socket of the left shoulder (right handed). This is the pivot point. Each club is designed to contact the ball then the ground at a different point. There are 2 schools of thought on ball position.

1. Keep the same stance and move the ball position.
2. Keep the same ball position and move the right foot in to narrow the stance for each club.

I prefer to keep the ball in the same position and take a narrower stance. Some of my students do half and half and some move. The hard rule is take a practice swing and take a divot. Place the front of the ball at the begining of the divot. It sounds like a ball position problem.

There could be some shallowing in your swing but that is hard to tell. If you want to submit a 4 -5 iron video, it would be easier to tell.

Lightbulb Ball Position

Hi David,

I have prepared a lesson on the ball position here.

Alternatively upload a video of your swing here

THANK GOD!!

I went to see my golf teacher and after a few swings he recommended that my thumb be moved so that it would be barely touching the club. AND GUESS WHAT!?! it actually worked!!!!!! I FINALLY got the height and distance that i've always wanted, and with virtually no slice or hook just straight.
Now I can enjoy golf
