Nothing over 200 yards

Just looking for a little insight as to what i might be doing wrong. I went to golfsmith and my average swing speed was around 100mph. But for some reason i am not able to hit any of clubs the distance they should be able to go. My driver fades to the right and only goes about 200 yards if im lucky. My 3w will go prefectly straight max 180 yards. My irons are the same thing 3-5 irons around 150 yds and progressively shorter. I was just wondering which part of my swing might be a power leak.

Re: Nothing over 200 yards

Are these range yardages or course yardages?

Re: Nothing over 200 yards

Hi Pal
A common swing flaw, but one that is easy to cure, is CASTING. when we cast ,what we are doing in effect is releasing the cluhead too early in the downswing this causes DECELLERATION through impact which leads to a loss of distance.
Try this pump drill.
from the top of the backswing, slowly bring your arms down as you normally would towards impact while maintaining the angles in your wrists(wristcock). Try to maintain these angles until the clubshaft is paralell to the floor. Now , slowly, take your arms back up to the top of your backswingand repeat 3 or 4 times, then swing through to a finish .Repeat this drill until you get a real good feel for maintianing your angles and delaying your release through impact.
I hope this is of help to you. you will soon notice a big improvement in your overall distance

Good luck
Aft

Re: Nothing over 200 yards

Your average swing speed is 100mph.
You can't hit a ball farther than 200 yards.

From the first number, there isn't a power leak anywhere. It's when you make contact with the ball that power is lost and a lot of it, too. So, stop looking at your swing and start looking at making proper contact.

What's the use of making all that speed if you can't transfer it to the ball properly? 100mph clubhead speed at impact will produce 250 yards and more given the correct launch angle and spin. 110mph is good for about 300 yards.

Send that club, to the back of the ball, into and along the intended line of flight, striking the ball dead center on the face of the club.

There is also the aspect of control. It is obvious that you can't control the club at 100mph since you are not making proper contact with the ball. Slow down a little so that you can control the club so that you can make proper contact with the ball so that you can transfer as much momentum to the ball as possible for maximum distance and accuracy.

One method to slow down is to shorten the backswing. Bring it back not too far on the backswing. In other words, bring it back far enough, not more.

Anyway, once you find a good method to make proper contact, forget about the swing and focus only on the back of the ball. Aim, swing, strike the ball. Practice extensively.

Re: Nothing over 200 yards

These yardages are from the course and the range. I had a feeling i might have been releasing too early. My original problem was not being able to square the club face and from concentraing on that i stopped paying attention to other things. And yeah i have a problem making solid cantact also. Well now i got stuff to practice with. Thank you guys and happy new year

Re: Nothing over 200 yards

Also, it seems you may not striking the ball in the "sweet spot" at the centre of the club face. Off centre hits, on an otherwise great swing, will cause loss of distance.

Maybe some Talcum Powder on the ball, or tape on the club face, when hitting it will give you an indication as to where you are striking it...???

Good luck...

Re: Nothing over 200 yards

You've gotta really, REALLY be missing the ball badly to only get 200 yards on your driver - I've got 100 mph driver SS, and I get 240 yards carry on average.
