manic golf

For a lack of not knowing what to call what I have Ill just say I have severe highs and lows in my game. The low usually hits once every two months and only last a day. Ive been playing for 9 months and have some talent for the game, Ive been shooting mid to low 80s for a couple of months now on several courses and my swing is solid. Then out of nowhere I go to the range and slice or shank nearly every shot. I used to shank or slice everything but today it was just my driver but my irons still werent to impressive. When I have these days it usually means that Ill be playing better than ever when it leaves. Im not looking for instruction on a slice or shank because the replies will be endless, Im just wondering if anyone else has these weird days.

Question Re: manic golf

I find a visit to the driving range always afects my golf badly. I think its the repetition of ball after ball dont no realy.but it takes me a couple of games to get back to my normal game only go when its raining now.

Re: manic golf

I see where your coming from but to not go hit any balls at the range is not the fix. I always warmup and I can always tell what kind of day its going to be by going to the range. You really never go to the range??

Re: manic golf

sounds like me and you are pretty similar...i to have been playing for less than a year and have found my score jumping all over the place...ill go from shooting 2-4 rounds in the 70s then be in the high 80s all of a sudden...lol I think we are both on the right track just need more experience....last weekend I was 1 under at the turn and then started shanking every other shot..whether its mental or physical fatigue, guys like us will never give up

Re: manic golf

I would think an answer to your problem is lack of routine in your game. It is highly likely that we can all play reasonable golf for a period and then the wheels come off for no apparent reason. If we introduce a routine for every shot, and this routine gives a good end result, then we are tuning both mind and body with repetitive thoughts and muscle memory. Look at the pros on the tee box and fairways. they never change their preshot routine, and always take a practice swing. These habits can only improve your consistency and a good end result. Do you ever see the club hacker carrying out these drills? I doubt it and thats why they will never improve.

Re: manic golf

Very good point....now that I think about it I did break my routine of standing behind the ball and using a waggle. Hmm might be something to it, thanks.

Re: manic golf

Yeah, I have those days every once in a while. Not very many shanks, maybe 1 or 2 a year, or 60+/- rounds. My biggest "slump" issues show up every 10-12 rounds, and are hooks, and/or fat shots for the most part. When they do show up, I just play the round out. I get home, and put my clubs away for a day, or two. When I come back to the course in a day or so, my ball striking is back up to "par". I figure fatigue, or just plain complacency are the culprits. I just don't let the bad rounds bother me. Everyone has them. GJS

Re: manic golf

Its what I call "Range Yips" It normally happens through hitting too many balls in quick succession. This can introduce swing faults like an out to in path very slowly, so it creeps up on you. The normal result is slices and shanks.

I suggest at the Range only hitting 50 balls in an hour, take a few practice swings between every ball, ALWAYS hold your follow through position and watch the ball land, this creates feedback to your brain that you need to learn. Sit down, have a coffee, think about it, watch others and see whats good or bad about their swings, learn from it.
