coaching youngsters

I have started coaching my friends ten year old son as his family cant afford to pay for lessons im mainly going to work on his swing over the winter at the driving range and the short game when the weather improves im just looking for some advice what should be the most improtant thing to work on swing wise with a 10 year old kid any good drills or range games i could get him to do ,from the few times i have had him out i think his concentration levels dont last to long so i need to find some ways of teaching him while retaining his interest and fun for the game loads of techincial stuff would bore him quck any advice would be helpful

Whyn'cha enroll him in one of them Tiger Woods schools or golf school camps, eh? He's sure to have more fun with youngsters his age... Then later on when he is more adept and interested in golf you can take him to the fairway.

Well if'n his family can't afford the lessons, there are many sponsored golf programs for kids out there.. Try checking them out in Google...

He needs to have some fun to maintain motivation. He will need some clubs that are OK for his size, "Young Gun" make some good junior clubs, see if there are any on EBay.

Take him around a par 3 Pitch and Putt course if there is one nearby, he should enjoy the putting as well. When he is at the range let him have a go at hitting the ball from the tee nice and slow with a good finish position, it does not matter how far it goes, just give him lots of praise. When he starts to make contact give him some targets to try for, have a little competition with him but make sure he wins sometimes.

Nice. I wish I had thought of that. Well, all I can add is reward him after each golf session with some ice cream or something like that...

Come to think of it many kids nowadays are stuck indoors with video/computer games, etc. Golf is a great healthy outdoor sport... yeah'n start 'em young...

Play with him.

Then watch him surpass you.

Then keep on playing with him.

Two things are fun: Learning something new and achieving something. At the range, practice for a bit then compete with five balls to the target, closest wins. On the putting green, practice for a bit then from a set distance, compete with five balls to the hole, closest wins. Check this forum for drills that can be used to compete. I put one up in the short game forum, it's called The Gimme, it's a putting drill. (google putting drill the gimme martin levac) On the putting green, practice for a bit then play 18 holes roundabout from one tee to another, highest score wins. At the range, practice for a bit then compete with five balls each for most curves to the target, highest score wins.

As you play with him, say what you need to say once and don't repeat it if you think you have to say it again, instead, wait for him to ask you about what you said earlier. Don't trust me, trust him. 10 years old, he can learn much faster than you.
