I have a friend with whom I play who sweeps the ball off the ground instead of hitting down and through. He has always played this way. I was thinking, how does one change this style. Do you simply say to yourself "I am going to hit down on the ball now" and just do it or do a lot of changes need to be made? His swing doesn't look all that bad for a typical weekend golfer.

Have him start by moving his feet close together. This will keep him from sliding which is what he is doing. He will hate the first couple of swings, but then when he starts to make solid contact, I bet he will realize the benifits of a steeper angle with the irons.

Good call. Sliding is definitely a prominent feature of his swing.
