hit farther, the easy way

some people believe, and I am one of them, that at address the weight is close to centered between balls and heals of feet. Then at the top of the backswing the weight is one the rear heal and front ball, then at the finish the weight is on rear ball/toe, and front heal. Now I have been loking into mostly set up lately and through the help of an instructor and some friends at another website, I have figured out why my weight never shifted correctly to the rear heal.
so try this if you like

without a club
stand up straight and bend over into golf like positon and flex the knees a LOT
now turn back to the top and feel where your weight is on your feet
exagerate the knee bend because by going to extremes we can get a better sense of it.

Now stand up straight with the knees locked, keep knees locked and bend over. Once in a golf like position just allow the knees to relax, it should be significantly less bend then before. Now turn to the top and feel where your weight is on your feet

report back if you like, the purpose is for you to do it and feel it so you dont have to go by my beliefs but rather yours. I have another one I find interesting but it is a little more complex

I bet the flashy title will allow this to get more views then the other post I posted about the same thing

Re: hit farther, the easy way

Crafty Shootin, crafty! Like it.

I tried it. With knees REALLY bent I feel like more weight is on my right than left foot (RH) with the weight concentrated on 3 points:
  • inside right heel
  • balls of right foot (down to second from last toe - not really little toe much)
  • big toe ball of left foot but less so than the amount of weight on the right balls
Then did it with knees almost locked and sensed the same thing but not as exaggerated. A good little feeler. Nice one.

Re: hit farther, the easy way

big drives get all the attention
when you did this how far apart did you have your feet. if they were wider then your hips try it again with feet 12-14 inches apart and see how it feels. Also, on this use no side bend and let me know again what you find. thanks for taking the time to try it.

Re: hit farther, the easy way

My feet were shoulder width. My playing partners are always telling me my stance looks narrow. I just tell them I've got narrow shoulders!

Not sure how you mean "trying it ith a shoulder bend" ?

Re: hit farther, the easy way

the quote you said you were unsure of "trying it ith a shoulder bend" I could not find in either of my post

now this is what I found for ME,
when I do this with my knees bent a lot I dont feel the weight shift as much to the back heal or front ball, the weight stays closer to where it was at address, But when I have just a tiny amoung of knee flex the weight moves to my back heel and front ball much more naturally. And according to some of the scientific articles, which are getting pretty good btw, right G1 this is where the weight should move in the swing. Try it again with mith more awareness in the feet and the with the knowledge of what I found for me, and see if you notice anything. remember to go to extremes so you can feel the extremes because the subtle differences are harder to feel. thanks again for trying, it is nice to see someone open to suggestoins and experimentation.

Re: hit farther, the easy way

Sorry, I meant "no side bend".....................damned mis-quotations.

Tried it again. A few times. For me the amount of weight feel I have is MORE exaggerated in the stance with a lot of knee bend, and felt less so standing upright. The positions of the weight between balls/heels doesn't change for me in either stance.

Re: hit farther, the easy way

ok, when we tilt bend forward at address some people also lean to the right at address and some people do this too much. that was the reason for no right side bend, just to take out the variable of people doing it too the extreme.

the hard part about typing, and not being in person is sometimes it is hard to do demonstrations, oh well. maybe you got something out oif it, maybe not, but at least you are experimental so you will have a better chance of finding the truths. If you are not moving the weight to the back heal, then "according to my beliefs and some schience ones as well

Re: hit farther, the easy way

It's always difficult to convey exactly what is meant when not in person, but I understand now. In my setup I have very lettle spine tilt away from the target until I get to my woods. I have a pretty rotary movement going on at the mo, so perhaps that explains my minimal difference between the two exercises.

Re: hit farther, the easy way

Hi Shootin,

OK, I gave this a go and here are the results:

With lots of knee flex: Weight along the inside edge of my right foot and towards the heel of my left foot.

With a small amount of flex: Along Inside of right foot
and inside edge of left foot.

I should add that I flare my left foot out by around 30 degrees at address though and I think this is why the weight feels more towards my left heel.

Re: hit farther, the easy way

Brian, IMHO
the second result you described ""With a small amount of flex: Along Inside of right foot and inside edge of left foot"". sounds much better, do you agree?

Thanks Shootin, Lowpost.

Yes we have a beautiful Grandson, Johnny. He is a British and USA citizen, he was born to my son and his American wife who live in Chicago. I hope I am still fit enough one day to play golf with him as I do with my son when I visit.
