Making my swing more upright

My swing at the moment is very much around my body so i need to make it more upright.

Has anyone got any tips or drills that i can use to make my swing more steep/upright?

Cheers

Re: Making my swing more upright

Allowing your hands to stay within your shoulders...all through the swing, never let the hands get outside the shoulder's width.

So to practice this, do 2 things:

1) From setup, just lift the club straight up and over to the trailing shoulder's side (but not outside the shoulder's width) with the arms and set the hands, and let the hands extend away from the body as far as you can (feeling like the leading arm pushes outwards, and the trailing arms folds just enough as what is needed staying relaxed. Now rotate the shoulders 90 degrees back. Do not try to let the hips rotate (but they will slightly), the less you rotate the hips the better. But the idea is to get the shoulders fully rotated from this position. You are now in a perfect position at the top.

2) Do the reverse. Start the swing from setup, but rotate the shoulders fully first, and do not move the arms/hands/hips. You should have the club just about parallel to the ground, and the toe of the face is pointing straigth up. All this was done in just rotating the shoulders. You should feel some really good streaching in the lower back. Let that part relax as much as you can. The more you try this move, the easier it will be and the better you will in a relaxed state in this position. Next, do what you did in the first drill, just lift the arms up and over your trailing shoulder.

Thats it. Option 2 is the proper sequence when you play, but the first drill isolates these 2 elements so you can feel them separately.

Re: Making my swing more upright

when i feel that my backswing is too far inside i think more in terms of a linear swing path than a round one. I use a reference such as a line or club and make sure the clubhead is pointing at it til my hand get around my rt pocket than i just try taking it back on the plane it creates. this gives me the feeling of swinging down the line rather than around it. and it creates a more upright plane.
hope this helps.

Re: Making my swing more upright

Everything said is very good, all i wanted to do is add what is helping me with my flat backswing....i use a David Leadbetter image of making practice swings in my correct posture with my tailbone gently touching a wall behind me. Don't let the club hit the wall as you complete the backswing...you have to be more upright in order to do this and it is a good image that i use on the course as well! hope it helps you too!
