His swing shaped the modern swing of today, to me he was the Newton of golf, we have to remember what the golf swing was like before Hogan, he was not perfect, no one is but he made a difference. Mind a few others on the way helped.

Mickeyuk

In what way is Hogan's swing different to the modern day swing?

I used Hogan as the model for the modern, total golf swing in my review, and I am not aware of any major differences to present-day golfers, other than a few idiosyncratic changes he made to ensure that he didn't hook.

Jeff.

He didn't take it to the grave, Mo Norman and Hogan both used a pre-turn in the setup. You can do a google search for "golf pre turn", tell you all about it. If there was a secret, that was it. Basically you just turn your sternum and head brhind the clubhead at address, while moving the hips slightly left, your basically starting your turn early.

Re: faults with hogans swing

his secret? the amount of importance placed on the waggle is probably pretty overlooked. and exactly how he did it is probably pretty misunderstood. I think I got am starting to get a pretty good idea of how to squish the grip and make it waggle, and the importance of it. always seeking, always learning, always observing. Hoping one day to get in on the big card game.

Hogans five lessons is known as the bible in our golfing group. I have had lessons from different pros over the years but whenever i am struggling i get out the bible and have a read. Learn the fundamentals and you will go a long way to grooving a consistent swing constantly.

In no way am I having a go at hogans swing and in my eyes i dont see many faults if any!Ishould have maybe worded the title different but why i did this is the fact that I drive with my left side into the ball just like he did and i am told by a few that this is wrong and i should hit against a firm left side and i will get more distance. What a load of rubbish!I have had lots of problems with my swing over the last 30 years but distance has never been an issue.I think that the drive forward with the left side and the straighting of the left leg at impact causes the club to whip through the ball and create more distance if anything, so maybe the modern swing has the faults.Hogan was a great !!

Neil,

I agree his waggle is a great pre-swing setter, I adopted it some time ago and it seems to engage my body to the type of shot I am going to play.

if you think the left side powers the swing then I challenge you this. Go borrow a speed stick, the kind vj endorses. grab with left hand and swing as hard as you can and read the MPH on it, then swing with the right arm only and read the mph. Do this mutiple times and then let us know the results.

Re: faults with hogans swing

You have misread me.What i said was in hogans swing the lower part of his body ie the legs thrust forward and the left leg straightening at impact causes the upper body to whip through at impact ,which is different from the modern swing. This is different from hitting from the left side in fact just the opposite

Re: faults with hogans swing

An interesting question. However, I'd say a peculiar subject. It's been oft-documented that most players today would state that only Moe Norman and Ben Hogan owned their swings (possibly Seve Ballesteros as well). Therefore one would expect there to be flaws. My understanding that Hogan's swing was setup to avoid a hook, that Moe Norman - while deadly accurate - wasn't very long, and that Seve tried to use his putter for things other than putting way, way too much.
