Is it worth buying a training club?

New to golf and I am looking at a swing training club called the swing setter. Has anyone used this to improve their swing, and if so then does it work? any advice or recommendations will be greatly appreciated. http://www.dwquailgolf.com/training/swing_setter.html

Re: Is it worth buying a training club?

I tried that thing, it's useless to me.

Have you ever heard of the specificity principle? It states that you become an expert at doing something by doing that thing and not by doing something else. For example, you become an expert at striking a ball with a club by practicing striking a ball with a club, not by swinging the swing-setter.

It does have its use. It's built to teach backswing set and downswing release. With its molded grip, it also teaches to grip the club in a specific fashion. If you prefer to grip the club differently, it may not be suitable for you, in my opinion.

What it does not teach is how to strike the ball. That, you'll have to learn with a plain old regular golf club and golf ball.

Re: Is it worth buying a training club?

hi
i find i cant use the swingsetter in the house without hitting the roof so i use a weighted club, its about 20 inches long with round weight on the end and has a molded grip. i find i use that a lot when it is wet outside just to warm up and keep my swing in plane and my timing in rhythm.

Re: Is it worth buying a training club?

Hello and welcome to the wonderful world of golf. Here you will find every gadget on the planet. I think training aids are useful. I havent used that particular one though. If I knew then what I know now I would of worked on grooving the swing from the inside out more then anything. This can obviously be done with the swing aid you mentioned so yeah it is worth it as long as you practice the right swing.

Re: Is it worth buying a training club?

Not much use for the swing setter for me.

You've probably got 10 good training clubs already.

Swing your club in super slow motion. Super duper sluggishly slow motion. The brain doesn't register a sense of time when swinging the club - just that the club is being swung in a particular way.

A heavy club is a decent tool, too. It really makes the super slo-mo swing tough!

Re: Is it worth buying a training club?

Thanks for the information on the training club. Being new at golf, what would you recommend me purchasing to improve my swing/game? Is there a training aid you have used that has worked for you? maybe it was a book or some type of training tool. I figure since you guys have been playing for a while, i can learn from your experiences and not go through unnecessary pain?!! I appreciate any information you can provide.

Re: Is it worth buying a training club?

Watch videos of good players swinging the club and striking the ball. Listen for the sound of the club as it moves through the air and the sound of the contact between club and ball. Watch for the left arm, how it's kept mostly straight on the backswing. Watch for the head, how it's kept mostly still for the backswing and the downswing. Watch for the feet, how they're kept firmly planted during the backswing and the downswing. Watch for the plane on which the club is swung.

The best advice I can offer is this:

Forget about playing a round of golf for the next six months. Seriously.

Find a coach, and explain that you want to learn the swing from the ground up - no bandaids.

Then stick with them and learn.

You'll be happy you did.

Re: Is it worth buying a training club?

I would say buy yourself a shagbag and fill it with balls and keep it and your wedge by the backdoor. As Martin levec stated videos are a great learning tool. I usually set up someones swing I like to play in a loop in slow motion. I also video taped my own swing to study. Sometimes its hard to believe you are doing what people are saying your doing. The proof is on the tape. Good luck!!

Re: Is it worth buying a training club?

My pro stands by this thing as the best.
I've used it. I think you really should both
have an idea of what you are trying to
accomplish and try it out to see if
might help you.

Re: Is it worth buying a training club?

lol I love how in that video he says the club transfers your weight for you. That is basically naturally done when you swing a golf club and only a teaching pro can get you to perfect it. My advice would be to save the 50-100 you're going to spend on a training aid and get lessons from a teaching pro. They teach things that will help your game amazingly more than a simple training aid. A teaching pro is really to only way to go for maximum improvement. At first you're game will suffer adjusting to the changes that will be made but just stick with it and after you adjust to your new swing the strokes will drop greatly.

Hope this helps,
Tim

Re: Is it worth buying a training club?

Thank you for all the tips about buying a training club. I am going to get some lessons and see where that takes me. I am extremely new at this and buying a training club will not get me what i am looking for. If I can't swing properly, what will a weighted club do for me? I will just be imbedding my mistakes into permenance.

Re: Is it worth buying a training club?

Just remember Tiger Woods didn't become the champion that he is over night. He worked at it his whole life. It will take time but you must work at it and if you do it will pay off. Just give it time. It takes years to make a good golfer, but the harder you work the simpler the game becomes.

You could go purchase the Medicus Dual Hinge 5 Iron. At first i was really skeptical of its abilities to help me but i used it over the winter and when i went golfing, BAM. I swung my irons great. Also it is a little heavier than a normal club. It costs about $120.00

Re: Is it worth buying a training club?

They also make a medicus driver. I am still skeptical about it but if I were going to buy any training club, this would be the one because it allows you to hit balls with it so you get the full feel of a perfect swing since you get to hit the ball and see it go straight down the middle.
