Golf Swing Video

hello, I have been working on my swing over the winter trying to get better and have come across one problem that i can't seem to fix. On the downswing i come down too steep. I am trying to flatten out the downswing so it looks just like my practice swing. As you can see from the video below on my practice swing the club comes nicely from the inside but on the real swing i come down a little steep. I have tried everything i can think of to fix it but nothing works. Any help is appreciated thanks.

Re: Golf Swing Video

Too steep. A practice swing has no other requirement than to look good. A swing to strike the ball is required to strike the ball properly. If there's a difference between the two, ultimately you'll have to correct something from one to the other. As you've explained, there is a difference between the two so you must correct something which leads you to come down too steep.

I think that gripping the club too weak with the left hand will have you believe that your practice swing is alright but when it comes down to the striking swing, you have to force the clubhead to close by coming down steeper. You must correct something because if you use your practice swing directly, you'll produce a slice.

Is my analysis correct up to this point?

I've been working out a method to grip the club properly in my mind for a while now and I think I've devised a method that can help you. It's simple, really. Without a club, extend your arms in front of you. Face the left hand palm down, face the right hand palm up. Swing your hands to "chop" at the ball with boths hands. Now grip the club. Think of your left hand as being over the club while your right hand as being under the club.

What happens with this particular grip method is that you can't flip the wrists at impact so you must turn them over as you swing through. This will allow you to swing just like your practice swing but still close the clubface on the way down.

Re: Golf Swing Video

In your practice swing you lead with your hips and bring the club from the inside. In your proper swing you lead with your shoulders and come over the top.

Work on starting your swing with your hips and letting your arms and right shoulder naturally drop down into the slot.

Re: Golf Swing Video

That was a great shot to get it between the tree and over the house.

Seve Ballesteros would have been proud of that one not too sure about the neighbours though

This makes perfect sense. Just do your practice swing and let the club run into the ball rather than attacking it. When you have the ball there your your arms and shoulders tense up and take over. Keep the arms and shoulders relaxed and as Brian suggested let them drop down through the hip move.

Re: Golf Swing Video

Just so I'm not scaring anyone that is a practice ball not a real golf ball.
Thanks for everyone's advice. It is really frustrating knowing what you are doing wrong and somehow not being able to tell your body to do it the correct way.

Re: Golf Swing Video

It looks great.
You're coming over the top
a little, maybe from too eager,
since practice swing doesn't
show that mistake.
Don't be in a hurry.
