Re: Fade drive, hook irons

Very pleased that helped with the driving.

If you're hooking the irons, the club face is getting closed prior to and through impact. If the ball position on the irons is OK, make sure you're hitting down through the ball. Really try to feel as if you're squeezing the ball forward. Don't be afraid to take a divot, in fact aim to do that on every iron shot (shallow not huge). The feeling of staying 'on top' of iron shots and striking downwards is a good one to have as it tends to stop the club head from getting ahead of the hands prior to impact. Give it a go and really drill the ball with all the irons in the bag!

Good luck, hope that helps.

Re: Fade drive, hook irons

OK, thanks. So I can get ahead of the ball with my irons then.

Re: Fade drive, hook irons

Even with irons, have the feeling on the backswing that all your weight gets behind the ball. But, obviously, don't sway to do this - it's really your upper body that turns completely behind the ball.

Then, unwind naturally. Because you'll be playing the irons slightly further back in your stance, at impact, part of you left side will be ahead of the ball. However, most of your weight will still be behind the ball and moving forward through impact as your swing unfolds. Trust the swing. The ball position ensures that with a normal swing path, you'll be descending into the ball. And, as I say, don't be afraid to take a divot, which is just the consequence of your angle of attack. Trying to avoid taking a divot will force a change of swing plane and, possibly, hanging back. So, think of squeezing the ball forward.

Maybe one way to get used to this is to practice some punch shots - play the ball slightly further back in the stance and puch through with the hands and arms (no more than 1/2 - 3/4 swing), keeping it low. The only way you can do this is to hit down and through the ball.
