It has become a real struggle.

I'm new to the forum so before I ask for a wee bit of advice I shall give you a little insight to my game. First of all the course I play is a par 72 Robert Trent Jones links style course, an excellent test of golf. On average out of ten rounds seven of those would be in the high seventies, so I play a reasonable game. Although I'm in my early sixties thanks to the great technology in equipment and balls I hit the ball as far as I did thirty years ago. I achieve good distance with my driver, fairway woods and the two hybrids I carry. Irons are my problem, I seem to have lost my distance and direction, here is a typical stuation. Yesterday playing a 400 hole into a slight breeze I hit a good tee shot and was left with about 138 yards to an easy pin. I had to pull an 8 iron and pushed the shot from a good lie into a greenside bunker, I'm struggling with my setup, my backswing and certainly my finish. For some unknown reason I just can't put the same swing on my irons anymore that I put on my woods. I'm losing about 10-15 yards on my irons and no idea why, any suggestions ?

Re: It has become a real struggle.

Hi there and welcome.

Without seeing a video of your swing it is not easy to suggest what is going wrong. You seem to have an idea that your setup and basic swing has some problems so I guess you will start looking at these first.

Your inconsistency with irons could be due to many factors but you should check your takeaway and position at the top of the backswing first, is there any tendency to fan the club inside or cup your left wrist? Are you flipping your wrists through impact, can you maintain a flat left wrist? Are you overswinging at the top if so try a more compact swing.

Sorry I cant be of any better assistance but I hope you can find the problem soon.

Re: It has become a real struggle.

your a really good player. My guess is that you are holding your right shoulder back on your irons for some reason. As mentioned in a previous post, think of replacing the left shoulder with the right. As you so through the ball the right arm should extend out like a piston towards the target
