Tips for becoming left hand dominant Does anyone know of any tips to become a left hand dominant player. I am currently right hand dominant which causes me to swing to far on the inside at times. The biggest issue i have is that on the downswing my right hand takes over causing me to hit high shots which sometimes tend to float through the air rather than bore through it and excessive draw but nowhere near a hook. I played tennis for a long time and have based my fundamentals on Ben Hogan's five lessons but need to become left hand dominant to improve my consistency and reduce my handicap from my current 7 to my goal of 3

Re: Tips for becoming left hand dominant Best drill I know for this is to hit balls using only the left hand. Do this repeatedly until you build up control and distance. I suspect it's really a questioning of strengthening up the left hand/wrist to match the right in order to get the feeling that the left hand can apply the power.

| Re: Tips for becoming left hand dominant A drill I often use in lessons with right hand dominant players who scoop the ball or hit bad hooks is to: 1. put their right out in front of them to mimick the club face and then swing a little and through to get the feeling of having a square or neutral right hand at impact 2. and then we hit hit golf balls and get them to focus on getting the right palm square at impact ... Then back to step 1 and then to step 2 ... It takes time becuase the right hand is only square at impact for less than 1/10000th of a second. :-) But I normally see big improvements within about 10 or 15 minutes.

Re: Tips for becoming left hand dominant Those are fine ideas, Arch; I've known good players who swore by that left hand only exercise. I have another approach for you to try, one that goes with the left hand drill but goes at it from a different direction: All things relative, an overpowering right hand produces the same effect as under powering with the left. My thought to you is to train the right side to produce a smooth power stroke through the ball, no forcing it with that unruly right. If you've read Bobby Jones, this will sound familiar. Jones talked about that impulse to whack it with the right hand, killing the shot. The answer I'm going to give you is on page 85 of your Hogan book, and the good advice is to finish high with that full follow through, just like Ben's picture shows.

Re: Tips for becoming left hand dominant It’s been my observation and experience that a shoulder action that places the right shoulder high and the left shoulder low, at the top of the swing, allows for right hand hitting from the top, whilst shoulder that action that has the left shoulder closer to level with the right at the top makes this almost impossible and requires left hand dominated pulling from the top. Is this part of what your saying,, Mr. Cmays?
