Tie One ON

Hello:

I wanted to share a tip for those who may have trouble maintaining their posture set at adress into the backswing. Many golfers raise up and lose their forward tilt as they perform the backswing. This often results in a reverse pivot or at minimum makes it difficult to deliver the club on the correct inside path on the downswing.

This is a tip I read as described by Martin Hall who is an outstanding instructor and has a knack for simplifying the golfswing. He is an instructor to many top players including Morgan Pressell.

He says to imagine or even try wearing a necktie while making the swing. At set-up with the correct forward tilt from the hips with a relatively straight back, the neck tie would hang straight down roughly in line with your upper arms. There would be a porportional amount of space between your chest and the tie. As you rotate your hips in the backswing, if you maintain the spine angle the tie will still hang away from your chest.

Using this concept, when you reach your full turn in the backswing, a view from behind the golfer will reveal a convex body position. Your backside will be closer to the target than your shoulders by roughly the same degree of tilt you had at address. Again, the tie would be hanging with plenty of space from your chest. This space allows room for the arms to move inside on the correct path in the downswing. This tip also makes it very easy to maintain the right knee flex and you will feel the correct pressure on the right leg as you load your weight into it.

From the correct loaded position, all you have to do is bump your hips slightly and turn while maintianing the tilt (it actually will increase slightly) as you swing down into impact.

I had trouble with understanding the concept of maintianing my posture. I would usually try to stretch my backswing with my arms and shoulders. I was too straight up and down with my body at the top therfefor never getting truly behind the ball to my full potential. This tip really helped.

Hey CMays:

Can I assume that your tip would help me hook my balls?

Thanks,
