My wife has been taking lessons and is doing great. I am a single digit player with a descent knowledge of the game but have ?'s. Full swing is going great but how do I begin to teach her the short game. I don't even waht to go to an executive course until I think she is ready. How would you all start? Thanks. Pooh

hi pooh
welcome to the site

how did you start to the learn the short game?
as you know the short game is all about feel so requires a lot of practice to become competent at it, surely you can show her the basic fundamentals for her to work on.

i would recommend dave pelz's short game bible a hefty read but it works or just google "short game parctice and see what comes up.
try this link

Thanks Slater, great links. Now maybe I will have a better understanding of where to start teaching the fundamentals, and what the important first steps are. Pooh

Re: ? how to start learning short game

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Don't listen to anything I say; I know nothing.

With that in mind...

It reminds me a little bit of my rock climbing days - people would say, "How do I teach my son/daughter to climb", and you have to say, man, take them to the seaside or to the nearest tree and watch them! You can't teach people to climb and you don't need to. Everyone can do. Not necessarily well, but everyone can do it.

Seems to me anyone can putt. The first thing I'd do is take her to the practise green or any green at a quiet time, and just hit balls, set some targets, increase the distance gradually. Only when she was comfortable and succeeding would I start to talk about grip, and then about not breaking the wrists/putting with the shoulders.

Then I'd make her do it from just off the green with an 8 iron, and when she succeeded at that, I'd point out to her that she now knows 40% of the game of golf, and that no matter how much she learns, no matter who else teaches her or how good she gets, that will always be true
