They are fatting because your swing arc is behind the ball. Check to see why: Are you getting on your back foot in the downswing, reverse"C" ? swinging too much from the inside, this may also cause the toe hits.

Re: Irons fatting and/or off the toe...!

First thing I would do is find a grassy area, and make several full swings, while cutting the grass, with out a ball. A 5 iron is good enough. After several swings you will know where the low point of your swing is. If that low point is not some where forward of your of your pants zipper, or your sternum, you know you have to look at your weight transfer on the down swing, or maybe you are dipping your left knee during your back swing. Other issues you might want to look for would be an over the top swing, or maybe you have your trailing shoulder too low at address, or lower it too much during the down swing. You could even be dropping your head during your swing. If you are a golfer that sways backwards during the back swing, make sure you sway forward the same amount during the down swing. It is not out of the realm of possibilities that some people forget to sway forwards on their down swing.

I am a firm believer in the one piece take away, and some what of a one piece down swing, with the first move down being a turn of the lead hip. That in it self will usually take care of any weight shift issue. I also believe that less you move your head from side to side, the more consistant an amateur's low point of the arc (ball striking) will be. I know some of the PGA players move their heads backwards, and forwards during their swings, but they have had plenty of time to perfect their swings. Most amateurs do not have the time, or the desire to practice as much as the pros do.

Just my two cents worth. GJS
