My swing - please help

Had my first video lesson yesterday. My pro got me tucking my right elbow into my body and swinging with a towel under my right arm. Any other help appreciated, especially on how to stop my head dropping like it does as I go back.....

thanks

James

Re: My swing - please help

Thanks Bri,
If you slow it down (Ive got the free cswing demo at the moment) My head drops by about 3-4inches as I turn my shoulders on the way back - it stays still as I swing through - not sure if losing that heights a bad thing but looking at all the pro's swings it doesnt seem to happen.

Re: My swing - please help

I recorded my own swing yesterday (only down-the-line and without a ball) because I wanted to see what what was going on in my swing.
I was shocked to see how awful it looked (Your swing would win a beauty contest compared to mine).

My head movement was quite similar though. On the backswing it moved down and a bit forward, just like yours. I used the same software (cSwing trial) to slow my swing vid down and compared it to some Swing Vision vids on youtube.
What I noticed was that I tried to keep the takeaway too compact and solid, so that I didn't roll my left hand over the right during the backswing. This caused me to try to get in an unnatural position at the top of my backswing which in turn caused my head to dip and move forward.
Can't see clearly from the YouTube vid if the same happens with you, but I thought I'd share it anyway.

You can try it out like this:
Get into your normal stance (without a club), hold out your hands straight, palms against each other.
Now take a normal backswing WITHOUT rolling your left hand over the right.
Try the same WITH rolling the left hand over.

The first one causes your head to dip and move forward. The second keeps your head still(ish).
I think the same could happen if you start to roll your hands over too late?

In my case doing this was a result of reading to much swing-theory so that I forgot fundamentals.

I'm no pro ect, but on that second swing it just looks to me like you could transfer more weight on to your right foot and turn them hips a bit more on the take away if you know what I mean...

Re: My swing - please help

Hi there,

I have to agree with Mike and Cmays here, there is no problem with this swing everything looks good, maybe a little more movement off the ball on the backswing, you stay over the ball a little to much for me, but I firmly believe the best players always have a little individualism.

Top quality swing, go practice your chipping and putting.

He is the exact same swing as yours and he's not to bad.

Ian.

Re: My swing - please help

Thanks Guys!

Its amazing what you can see when you slow it right down. My hips are really quick...
My right elbow is pointing straight at the camera - Is it right that this should be tucked underneath as if i was doing a bicep curl?
I think if it is tucked underneath it will get me rolling my hands over and stop the head dip.

My hips are very quick as well, At impact my hips are already all the way round into the follow through position. Is there a good drill to try and slow them down?

Thanks
James

Watch the video of Arron and listen, it's all about hip turn when you stay over the ball.

I understand you have been for a lesson and seeking re-assurance that what you are being asked to do is correct, I have done the same many times.

Personally I really like your swing.

Ian.

Yes Mox,

I have heard this type of swing called this, if you stay over the ball that is what it looks like.

I think it is fine, 'swing how you like' as long as the basics are there you can't go far wrong.

This type of swing does need good body rotation, maybe in later years you may have to change it.....

Id be a bit worried if I had to call him "master"!

I take on board what you say and as Ian said - its my first lesson and Im only seeking reassurances- without being rude to any pro's out there - you can turn professional playing off a handicap of 4 and it doesn't make you a good teacher.

What he said seems to make sense - Im struggling to implement it (ie keeping my elbow tucked in and extending through impact and not hitting across the ball. Its coming slowly though!

Thanks for the advise guys!
