Pro Dollar Bill Divots?

Hey all you pro's and great amateurs: How do the pros get such nice long dollar bill divots with their shorter irons and wedges? I always hit the ball first then start my divot in front of the ball, but I very, very, rarely get that dollar bill perfect divot that the pros seem to get on every shot. I consider myself an excellent wedge player and I never need to know my yardage inside 100 yards as I can judge the distance with feel for the shot, but my divots vary in size. Why is this?????????

You don't have the steep angle of attack. You shallow out a bit, and apparently have become good at it. Nothing wrong with that.

I often get asked the same kind of question ... and over the years I have tried to explain why pro's have a particular divot pattern ...

but, you know what?

You're comparing yourself to the top 0.00001% (or something like that!) of golfers who play on Tour and you see on TV. There are TENS OF THOUSANDS of pro's who have the same divot pattern as you and I ...

As long as you get the desired shot result, who cares what the divot looks like? Focus on the shot result ... Great shot or great divot?? I'd take the great shot everytime.

The only pace you should be concerned about it is in the sand

OK guys thanks for the input. While the shot result is obviously much more important than the divot I was just curious. I will share a "Secret" that has helped me immeasurably with wedge play. This works especially well out of a tight lie, pine straw, hard pan, or nice firm fairway. I move my eyes to the top front quadrant of the golf ball and keep them there till after impact. Try this on the range and you will be amazed at the crisp contact that you get each and EVERY time. I use the writing on the range ball and face it to the target them keep my eyes on it. Try this little trick for solid wedge contact, it has really improved my ball striking.

You also have to consider, the pro has the specs, shaft, loft, lie on his clubs done way more often then the average player, he is playing on a course that is manicured better then most of the greens we play on, watered constantly prior to the tourny, and he plays daily, his swing is much more predictable/consistant. Most of the pros have also had their wedges tour grinded, removing the bounce, so they dig a little better. Not a wise move if your a handicap player, you need that bounce.

Also consider that frequently the pro is holding off the rotation of the club face with the shorter irons, keeping the face square through the ball and well after, making a longer more rectangular divot rather than more fan shaped at the ends.

I have heard that I'm suppose to hold club gentle like but to power through a divot takes a tighter grip and a forceful swing...Right?

I have heard so many opinions on how tight too hold the club.
