give yourself 2 inches, you can get 50 yds

This is regarding your left shoulder. I used to bring my left shoulder in close to my chin as i would go back to backswing. Then for my downswing i would keep it there and always end up hitting way too fat. Which had my sliding foward to comesate and a bunch of nonsence to compensate for my left shoulder beiing way too far behind the ball on the downswing.

I seemed to hit a wall and 250 was the furthest i could drive but I have driven 320 like once in my life so i know i had the ability to hit further. So i decided to look at my swing and the hip slide was way out of control and almost painful looking on my video.

So i fixed my slide and started rotating better, but then i was back to fat shots.

then i discovered that on the downswing my left shoulder was still at my chin where as pro have as much chin left shoulder seperation as they can at impact. All i did was after transition and weightshift i would move my left shoulder out as far away as i can (which is kind of like going from a "shugged" shoulder position at the top to a lower "unshugged" posiiton at the bottom) and when my left shoulder is unshrugged and extended wow, you wouldn't believe how much distance and accuracy i had got from that little 2 inch move. It allowed me to decend on the ball correctly get perfect contact, get moch more power uot of m right arm, defintaly helped me have more right arm bend and right wrist cup into impact, have everything squared easier and so much more, and even helped me come alot more from the inside. Unshrugging your shoulder almost forces you to ocme from the inside too.

hope it helps you all as much as it helped me, my swing is effin beautiful now (well the result anyway..... i have always had a furyk-esk like uglyness to my swing). It just drives me crazy how such a little change can help soooo much.

So to sum it all up, don't forget to "unshrug"/lower/extend your left shoulder as much as you can in the dowswing.

Re: give yourself 2 inches, you can get 50 yds

I'm sorry to bring up and old topic. But can someone go into this a little bit more? Is this basically the same idea as dropping your arms? Because when you drop your arms, your left shoulder moves away from your chin....

Confused

The seperating of the left shoulder from the chin concept is supported in the books Newton on the Tee and The Physics of Golf in addition Nick Faldo (in Golf the Winning Formula , Ernie Els (in How to Build a Classic Swing), and Byron Nelson. Each supported the merit of the idea and how they did the same in their swings.

The Physics books say that when force is directed in a direction it will continue in that direction until it is acted on by another force. That means that directing the shoulder in the direction of the target will move the swing in the direction of the target as well. Since the arms are connected to the shoulders they will be pulled by movement in the shoulders. The left shoulder moving towards the target (or up) will pull the arms down next to the chest which will drop them downward and increase their speed.

hi golfinguy
interesting post and i was trying what you said, when you lower the shoulder is this because you relax your upper arms a bit more or is it that you try and pull the shoulders lower, i found i did shrug the shoulders if i gripped the shaft harder than normal.
cheers
bill

Re: give yourself 2 inches, you can get 50 yds

I always thought that on the backswing your left shoulder comes under the chin. Then on the downswing your right shoulder gradually replaces the position of the left shoulder at the end of the swing. I am trying to visualize what you are talking about. As to hitting the ball fat I tend to think perhaps you are staying on your right side too long and not transferring weight to your left side. In other words your timing is off. IMHO.
