Re: new to golf, made a 78

Not to take anything away at all, because you still have to get the ball from the tee to the hole, but:
The course was less then 6000.
It was a muni, so I can't imagine it was setup too difficult.
He is 18.
Just took up the game, so there is no previous bad habits to get in his way.
Obviously has very good eye-hand coordination.
If you can hit greens, then years of putt-putt as a kid take over and away you go...78.

Very believable.

What I want to be sure of is the proper # of mulligans, gimmies and ob/hazard penalties.

That's exactly what I'm saying. I'm guessing if you add those in we might be looking at 120. Either way, I'm not super concerned about it; matter of fact, I'm not concerned at all. But he would have to be 1 in a million to shoot 78 - a real 78 - after 2 months.

Hey, after just two months a 102 is very respectable. I guess you know that the majority of golfers never break 100.

Re: new to golf, made a 78

Um, hello guys ... some people just pick up golf very quickly. You're a bunch of pesimistic bastards!!! Just because you guys can't play as well you give the guy stick?

I was breaking par after 18 months. I took me less than 6 months and I was scoring in the mid-to-low 70's on tournament courses in amateur tournaments. And I was only 14 years old.

I was a scratch handicap by the age of 15.

I don't remember how long it took me to break 80 for the first time, but it could well have been in the first 2 or 3 months. I do remember scoring a 73(+1) before Christmas of my 14th birthday.

Who says he can't break 80 in 2 months now!?

No problem! I know how you feel. Don't worry about them, you just play golf and enjoy it. Take the positives from your scoring and build on it.

Re: new to golf, made a 78

One thing I'd say is that if you're that good already then don't bother having lessons yet. Most local pro's won't have half the talent you have and will probably do you more harm than good.

Even though you're 18 you are still young enough to have a go at making a career out of golf if you have that much talent.

Golf is a funny game though, I have quite a bit of natural talent (nowhere near yours though) and was hitting 12 GIR after 1.5 months but now after nearly 3 I can barely hit the ball

Where did you learn to swing? Do you have an orthodox swing or a swing only a mother could love? I'm curious to know how you got to where you are so quick, maybe we could all learn something.

Re: new to golf, made a 78

my swing, i dont know where it came from. when i was younger and played baseball i loved low balls and my coach would always tell me im not golfing, but when i hit them balls i killed them.

everyone tells me i have a good swing, a perfect circle and stuff like that. im gonna try to get a video clip to put on here of me swinging.

eye hand co-ordination, mines pretty good i was rated the best catcher and pitcher in my age range back when i played baseball.

i got my new custom fitted driver today, stiff flex for my aggresive swing and minus 1 inch cause im kindah short. This thing has some power, im hitting over the trees i usually hit into with my 5 wood that i was hitting 230-245 yards and these are almost all straight. so i got something to look forward too friday when i get out.

Re: new to golf, made a 78

Yep,
I'm new at golf too. I started about two months ago and been able to play only two times full 18 holes. We've got some snow here in Finland also (As our Canadian friend commented on their winter:-)

I am envious about the score 78, but that's life. Some can do it - or there might be more to the story. If you don't have a handicap, do you have a creen card? Are you sure about the rules and penalty shots?

BUT most importantly! GOOD JOP! Keep it up and you are very close to getting a profession - is you need one. Sometimes something just comes natural to some people. One might a background in icehockey, baseball, tennis or some other sports - or just natural active childhood.

I am not even near 78. (My HCD is 47 at the moment.)

BUT I am aiming to be a very good senior, maybe even go on a tour:-)
I do have seven years to practice before I will be a senior golfer.

Re: new to golf, made a 78

After 2months of playing I was still hitting 120+. Good job. I been playing 2/5 years now and still hit mid 80's. I have shot a couple of 78s. My best round was a short course par 65 I shot 70.

I have a mate who never play golf before in his life, I took him for a round the other week. and he smashed his 4 iron 250 yards. He hit his Lob wedge 120 yards. We were on a 160 yard par 3 he pulls out a pw and puts it at the back of the green. But as he had never played before he would putt the ball right off the putting surface.

Congratulations on the 78, Doogkie. Don't let the 102 get you down, though. Get with a good instructor (PGA member, IMHO) & the sky's the limit for you.
