Unlikely Eagle

I was having a terrible round on Sunday at Intramuros in Manila.

I got to hole 9 (a short par four with part of the old Spanish wall guarding the green at the right. I took out my 9 wood and tagged it high and slightly right, which made it disappear behind the wall from my view. I thought it was going to be claimed inside the wall for OB, but somehow it got over and landed on the green some 45-50 feet from the hole. That was a miracle in and of itself.

Still euphoric from having escaped that, I was thinking get it close for birdie and enjoy the hole. I read it for a slight dip to the right and downhill... I was more surpised than my cadie when it dropped!

That is a fantastic feeling that I hope I get to experience again.

Cheers!

Hi Dadvocate,

thats one hell of a Drive in my opinion. (and that with a 9 wood?) The hole is 380 yards (346meters) par 4 HDCP 9. Since it sounds like you neary skied it too, what is your distance for a Driver?

Re: Unlikely Eagle

I’m not sure where you got that from, but I think your totals are a bit skewed.

I’d love to tell you that this hole is 380 yards, but there is not a chance in hell that this is correct for the Intramuros I play. I know this for myself, because I can hit my 5 iron roughly 170 consistently and land within a 50 yard chip shot to the green. The only way your totals are right is if someone is measuring from the old blue tee mark set back maybe 50 yards from where I hit. But then that is still only around 270.

My friend routinely tees it near or on the green with his seven wood from our traditional white tee. He’s a great golfer, but not even he could carry 380 with his 7 wood.

Are you in Manila? Is there another Intramuros I don’t know about

I’ll have a look at my card when I get home tonight and see what it says. We are also playing a "**** golf " tourney there on Saturday. I’ll snap a shot and post it so you can see what I mean.

Cheers!

Re: Unlikely Eagle

Sorry mate got the wrong course.

the ninth at the Intramuros is 241 Yards (221 meters).

I feel better now, with those other distances I got worried and thought about giving up golf since my 3 wood only goes 225 meters.

Cheers,
Ian

Re: Unlikely Eagle

241 is what I get also, but that means I carried way more on this hit than I should have. I get about 175-180 yards normally with this 9 wood. The only thing I can think of is that I bounced it off that back side of the wall at the other end. That could account for the extra yardage. That makes it even more unlikely since most ball in there never come back out to play.

I think I’ll go for the green again with my 3-wood this weekend and see what happens.

“Only” 225 meters! You poor soul I get that too, maybe twice in ten hits. Factoring out my ugly duffs, my average is about 200 yards. The new 3 wood I have seems to be helping my consistency some. Maybe the extra yards will come with time.

Which course did you find by the way? I’d be interested in checking it out.

Cheers!

Re: Unlikely Eagle

That's some great stuff.

I've had 3 lifetime eagle chances, all par 5's.

Congrats!

Re: Unlikely Eagle

I’d love to get an eagle on a par five. There is something amazing in the one-two combo of a great drive followed by an excellent approach to the green, and then topped off with a smooth putt that makes that accomplishment one of the greatest in sport in my opinion. If there could be an apt golfing hat trick (a better version of the turkey in bowling), that would be the one in my opinion.

Maybe some day

Cheers

The only thing I can think of is that I bounced it off that back side of the wall at the other end.

I say use all the props that are there. When I used to play in England I was a member of a coure and on the 7 hole there was a bridge across a stream just short of the green, as I was only a junior then, I used the bridge a hell of a lot to get up to the green, my dad I think named the bridge after me.

I found this:

maybe you now the course or it is not near you.

Cheers,
Ian

Re: Unlikely Eagle

Is the seventh a par three?

If, so, did you hit a bouncer with a high loft on that? I’ve got this image of you hitting a high wedge shot (or maybe an 8 or 9 iron) toward the green and bouncing it up there.

If I try that, I’d end up hitting it low and fast and bouncing it right over the green into God knows what.

Thanks for the link. I’ll have a look.

Cheers
