When I shoot my best rounds, they seem to be at least 4 better, than my previous best round. This is more than a little frustrating. Two years back shooting from winter tees and to winter greens I shot a 75, previous best 81. I'd been trying to break 80 for ages. Next week 76. It took me 9 months to get below 80 on a regularish basis (every other round). Whereupon following a further 8 months I shot a 71 to beat my record by 4. Looking on the bright side in about 6 months I should be celebrating a 68.
