help for the wife

what is the standard grip for the ladies...my wife is about 5foot..small hands..and stubborn!! she insists on using the overlap though i have told her to use the baseball grip. Just curious as to what the ladies her size are using? Thanks in advance!!! (yes we ae both in our first year of playing golf) By the way she slices like crazy!

It is not what the hands do to interlock, overlap or use the 10-finger...it is the position of the plams of your hands that makes the difference.

Having the plams facing each other is a neutral grip. This requires a moderate amount of hand rolling to square the face into impact. Hand rolling is the action that many of us will debate about for days on the best way to perform this correctly, and consistantly.

Without getting into the discussion (please...) let's keep this to the grip.

Having the palms more on top of the club moves the grip to a stronger position. "Strength" in this term is not "power", but in relation to the position of the leading hand's ease of returning the club face back to square with less effort...i.e. the hands are stronger at getting the face square with the same effort then from a neutral position.

If she is slicing, look at the position of the hands. If she has a weak grip, then definatly move it to neutral. This will have an immediate affect. If this causes all sorts of discomfort and whining about "that doesn't look right!", then say "neither does your slice".

Basically, there are things about the grip that can be changed. Interlocking, overlapping and 10-finger grips all have a slight difference to how the hands sit on the club, and hand size, grip size and just plain prefernce have a small roll. But, strong, neutral and weak grip positions will grately affect the way you play and the predominate shape of your shots. Counteracting grip strengths with alternate methods using alighnment, swing path and body rotation all play a roll...and what makes this such a difficult and fun game.

I didn't quite understand this Greg. As I look at my grip :- if my left palm goes more over the club my right palm then goes more under the club. And conversely if my right palm goes more over the club, then the left palm goes more under it. Do I assume that the first one I mentioned is the stronger grip?

You should be able to move both palms more on top of the club...why are they not moving independantly?

The leading hand's position is generally deamed the "strength" indicator. Top is strong, to the side is weak.

I personnaly advocate the trailing hand's position to be on top...this pre-cups the right wrist, and allows for an anti-swat move (horizontal hinging of the wrists is bad, vertical hinging is good), so anything you can do to reduce the ability to hinge the wrists on the horz, I like).

Can you have the trailing hand on the side of the grip? Sure. Just be careful to keep from trying to use it for power, because if you try, you might get 1 good one with some nice power, but 8 others will end up 20-30 yards offline.

Hi I am a petite lady and this is also my first year of golf. I use the interlock grip with a strong left hand. One reason she may be slicing the ball is the position of her wrist at the top of the backswing.

Had a few lessons last year, I'm 5ft 3 with very small hands even for someone of my height. The pro told me to use the interlocking grip as well. For pics, try the BBC website (BBC SPORT | Golf | Skills | Grip variations: Interlocking), and click on the "interlocking" tab.

Yes, Virginia joined a few other states that are trying to punish habitually severe bad drivers. Things like reckless driving, DUI now have additional fines, payable over 3 years. When it all adds up, a 20 mph over the limit speeding violation could be 3k. And the kicker, is that the additional fines are only able to be given to local VA residents! That's the part I don't like. But, VA is still tops in my book, I have lived from CA to FL, and will always return to VA.
