Re: How Far?

I've just returned to this thread and like the way it became so heated.

I suppose it's fair to ask, what is the real point behind the original question. If it's an open, how far do ladies hit the ball on average? that's one thing. However, if it's really a question about minimum distances for the average club lady golfer to play competitively with men, then that's a different matter.

In truth, I think it would be very difficult for the women to keep up with the men if they don't drive the ball at least 175yds. I guess the rest stems from there in terms of how far you might hit the other clubs.

I've certainly played with ladies from time to time who don't hit the ball anything like that far. Doesn't bother me at all but, in the spirit of the question, the truth is, they play two or three shots on nearly every hole before I get to play my second.

Re: How Far?

I asked the original question as I only started to practice last september and just wanted a realistic goal to aim for, nothing to do with competing with men. However on returning from a holiday to Spain yesterday its no wonder a lot of ladies struggle with golf as it appears most of them are being taught by their husbands who are probably self taught by the look of their dreadful swings and passing on their very bad habits. My advice to all ladies is to take lessons with a pro. Within the last week I have hit tee to green 160yrds with my 5 iron and over 200yrds with my driver, not bad for my first season. Ladies would give the men a good game, even you, if they learnt from a pro.

Well madam, that's telling us!

We men are a bit Blokey and I am sure you would want us no other way (dreadful swings and all), just as you ladies are in general delightful creatures that are so good at putting us in our places (Even if you cant read maps )

Smile Re: How Far?

Having played for almost 50 years, an old pro once told me never to teach my wife to play golf-never to give advice also. She has had many lessons over the years with the best and her game shows it.
Always get lessons. Tips are ok but never from family members. This db probably saves marriages but risks giving bad advice. Always check out tips from this db with a pro to verify authenticity.

Re: How Far?

Of course distance is important, but once you have obtained an average distance I think distance control is much more important.I have played with men that have driven the ball vast distances to find they have only a wedge to the green,,and they hit the wedge the same way usually over and beyond the green.
A canny Scot once said to me"you can make up for lack of distance,,,,but never for lack of accuracy".
