Re: Are leftys right-handed?

I'm left handed but shoot left.

Left handed people live in a right-handed world. Cars (in North America are right handed), scissors are right handed, can openers are right handed, computers are right handed, most musical instruments are right-handed. The list goes on and on.

That said I think left handed people SHOULD have an advantage hitting left. My theory with "handedness" is it is dependant on the FIRST time you do something. Once you start doing fine motor skills it get wired into your brain and it's very difficult to unwire.

One theory I heard (and applies to me) is that your "handedness" is determined by your dominant eye. I am right eye dominant so it becomes my forward eye, thus I stand with my right side towards the target.

Test for eye dominance:
Make a circle with you thumb and index finger (like the okay sign) with both hands. Keep you hands about a foot apart and keeping both eyes open and look through the circles (like a telescope) and pick out an object. Now close one eye, did the object move?? If so your other eye is the dominant one (the one where the object did not move).

Just a theory..
I am ambidextrioussssssss or however that word is spelled. I write with my right hand, but can do almost as well with my left. I switch hit in baseball. I play hockey left handed. When I started golf I tried both. Right or left I hit good, but had a lot more distance as a lefty. Right handed I hit the driver about 240 while as a lefty I am consistantly 290 to 300..........what did I quote you for? Oh yeah. I am left eye dominant and play golf left. I think this helps me a lot because standing on the right side of the ball, my back eye is the strong one and helps to "keep your eye on the ball" further through the swing. My head is coming up with my shoulder turn, but the eyes are still on the ball.

Arrow Re: Are leftys right-handed?

Absolutely I am. My left hand is very weak and inhibits power in my swing. This is why so many righ handers who play left hit big pulls. I used to have an upshoot flare fade due to this pulling right hand. Now I hit a draw by finally adding the left hand into the swing.

i learnd from jack nicklaus who said you can never release the club too early. Sounds strange but I do that with my left arm/hand now almost at the beginning of the downswing and the club finds its way to the back of the ball on the "inside" producing the draw. There's no way I would have believed or even tried releasing the club that early if it weren't jack saying it!

gotta luv this ridiculous obsession

Re: Are leftys right-handed?

hi
lee trevino is left handed and plays with right handed clubs and he maintains that 99% of golfer are playing the wrong way, he says right handed player should use left handed clubs, you should lead with your strong arm, if i was 18 again i think i would change to lefthanded clubs but at 54 i'm to old to change, think there are more lefthanded player playing with right handed clubs that the other way with righthanded player using lefthanded clubs as left handed clubs harder to find.

I always found that funny how down in the United States, it was very hard for me to find anything lefthanded. Then anything I did manage to find was way overpriced. I travel down to the southern US for 3 weeks every winter and this always frustrated me. I live in New Brunswick, Canada, and never have this problem up here anywhere. Anything they have in right, they also have in left, at exactly the same price. Lots of choice, etc. I always wondered if they can give the lefty's a choice up here, why can't they do it down there.

That being said, our course has the highest rate of lefthanders per capita in North America. Lot's of lefty's up here, so that could be the reason why so much is available to us. It is not at all uncommon to have a 4some made up of 2 right and 2 left. I've gone out a few times per season with 4 lefty's in the group. People visiting from outside are amazed at the amount of people here playing from the left side. It must be something in the water. Most of the lefty's that I play with are righthanded.

Re: Are leftys right-handed?

hi
you did not say if you were a lefthanded golfer playing left or a righthander playing left.
if the later do you think you have more power leading with your strong arm,
bill
