Pull Hook with driver

Guys I am at my wits end here. Have been playing the game for near on 3 years now and current handicap it 21.3. I am quite a big hitter and until recently had various results with the driver, but now I have lost all confidence in it. I am now hitting a 3 iron off the tee and taking a longer club for my 2nd shot just to get it in play!!!

I am pull hooking all the time with the driver taking a guaranteed 3 off the tee every time. I am guilty of a strong grip and taking the club back wide from take off (a friend suggested I do this to stop the hooking). Could these both be the culprit???

Re: Pull Hook with driver

I reckon you must be coming in to out. I was doing the same thing. Had a lesson and I was told I was going in to out. So if you make your takeaway steeper it might help some what.

Re: Pull Hook with driver

Hi Scott,

If you are indeed pull hooking, that is the ball is starting left and hooking further left, you must have a outside to in path. The hook part is from the face also closing across the ball.

I suspect your shots are also low, and perhaps smothered at times.

Here is the explanation for swing faults. I had posted another excellent link on this subject, which I can't lay my hands on at the moment, but this should do as well.

Re: Pull Hook with driver

I have the same problem and I am a 4 handicapper; it happens to everyone when they:
stand too far from the ball
have the ball too far forward or back
swing too hard
lose their angle prior to impact, clubhead gets ahead of hands
have too much body movement
have too big a backswing
swing too much inside to out, flipping the wrists at impact
All of these can be corrected by going to the range and taking each of the above and correcting them
