Waist or arms to start.....

I am a beginner in golf and I think too many advices I have taken that make me more confusing....

One says that to start your down swing move a little bit your waist to the left and followed by your arm. Other says that down swing starts from your arm...

Which one is correct or both of them are wrong...

Help me....

Regards & Thank you

Eri

You are probably going to get even more confused asking 100's of opinions on this sight. The trick is to try them out and see what works for you.

My first drill I give to my students is the walking drill. Master that, and you won't worry about the transition.

Re: Waist or arms to start.....

The upper body rotates to the right, this creates resistance between the upper and lower body. The lower body is resisting the upper. The lower body then naturally starts first(the hips rotating to the left), the upper body follows as a result. The downswing is initiated by the the hips NOT THE ARMS. The only way the arms can continue down an inside to inside path is to rotate the lower body to the left.

Re: Waist or arms to start.....

the hips are usually used more in the follow through... try to stay still in your backswing to help maintane balance..

Re: Waist or arms to start.....

See if this makes any sense. IF at the top of your backswing your on the correct plane, your wrist was cocked at the proper 9'oclock position, your grip is correct , and feet and shoulders are aligned down the target line, THEN starting with the arms tends to close the club face causing the ball to go left of target for a right handed swing. Starting the waist first with a weight transfer to the left heel opens the club face. Depending on the timing between the two body parts gives you the inability to recreate the same golf shot everytime, fatigue being a factor. When your are at the driving range you should notice that as the clubs get shorter the waist becomes more quiet. This causes you to aim a little more to the right to counter the ball flight towards the left.

Lower body is what the downswing is all about.

Re: Waist or arms to start.....

I have tried both ways myself, when i was a 2 plane swing I would use my hips to start my downswing, and when i was 1 plane I would use my left arm to start my swing.

the last 6 weeks I have just focused on swinging up slowly with everything together and then down slowly with everything together, then hitting hard at the impact zone. I don't know if I am 1 plane or 2 plane because have not looked or put it on cam, but I know I am on plane through impact and hitting a small draw, with plenty of backspin on my short irons.

Re: Waist or arms to start.....

On your backswing, you generate the coil like a spring around the hips. If you start your downswing with the arms, then you are probably going to 'waste' the potential energy stored in this coil. Then in order to generate the clubhead speed, you need to employ a lot more control and effort to your arms and hands.

Above is my personal opinion. On a sidenote, if you are a beginner, do seriously consider getting some lessons and maybe some books (I highly recommend The Modern Fundamentals of Golf by Ben Hogan). I'll explain to you why. I've been golfing for 10 months myself. Same as you, gone through so much 'information', and I'm sure you know by now, a lot of them contradict.

I've gone through 10 months of experimenting everything under the sun, trust me What was effective for me? Ben Hogan's book. He tells you (and draws in detail) how to grip the club, your posture, the works. If you follow that before you get flooded with a lot of other info, you are most probably going to start out on a much smoother path.

Feel free to msg me if you need me to share more experiences Some of the other members here are also extremely helpful and will gladly share their experience so you can learn from their mistakes

Enjoy!
