Anyone with a Titleist 983K?

Hey All,

6 Months ago I decided to buy a cheapo driver (Hippo Powerstrike), it cost me $90 Australian.

Anyway I am now starting to play alot better and it occured to me that this cheapo driver is simply not going to cut it, I have to give it my all to hit 300 yards.

So the last few weeks I have been looking at some other drivers, and with a tight budget of $300 Australian a driver that I read about is the Titlelist 983K.

Today I hit a few drives with it and with so much more ease I am able to drive the same distance as my cheapo driver, and of cause with so much more accuracy, so it makes me wonder if its worth breaking the bank to get one. I am going in early before wednesdays round to hit a few more balls with it, the Local Pro is gonna watch me and give me his views.

So my question is does anyone use this driver or had experience with it? If so whats it like for you?

I bought one this fall and I'm very happy with it. Long and straight. It is a 10.5* with a YS-6+ shaft.

I am very happy with it and can recommend it, especially now when the price has dropped significantly. Hard to find a better in that price range.

I was hitting the 10.5º today, but with the regular default Flex shaft. I have a quick tempo but I found that with this club I could not swing the same way, so I toned down the back swing and just hit solid through the ball, and the results were amazing. I was on a 265 yard par 4 and hit the green on the full, and I was swinging slower than usual.

So it brings me to think that I won't bother with a Stiff Shaft as having to tone down my swing a little could help with my whole game, I had a lesson last week where I slowed down my swing a bit with my irons to great effect and now I think it'll work with the 983K Driver.

I have a quick lesson on wednesday where the local Pro will check my swing out with the 983K, and maybe try adjust a few things.

A Brand new 983K is $450 here in Tasmania, Australia. But he has a second hand one in store in good condition for $300, so not sure what i'll do yet, I am not real wealthy so the second hand one is appealing.

I bought mine for a little less than $300 USD september 2005 and it was about a 8/10 quality.

Yeah same here, the one thats second hand is probably 8/10 Quality, the grip is split the tiniest bit, but they will replace the grip for free.

I dont have one the 983K but I did have the 975D (still do and great club) and now the 905T. I have hit the 983K many times and think that they are still awesome clubs. However, I think the price that you mentioned there is quite a bit on the steep side (maybe its because you live in Tasmania and not much competition for golf shops there).
Have you considered looking on ebay (try the US ebay as well)? I am sure you could get them for much cheaper. I have bought quite a lot of stuff from there and even with shipping it was still cheaper. You can buy the 983K for around $140US for a very good condition one so even with shipping and tax (you many not get taxed when it arrives in Aus) its going to be a much better deal. You can probably get it for even cheaper.

You're right about the price. I checked again: I payed a little less than $200 US in september, so anything more than that, is too much.

The prices are different here in Australia, like if you were to buy a brand new club for say $250 for we'll pay about $400.

So if I was to buy a 983K for $140US is would cost me about $250AUS, which is only about $50 less than the one I was looking at.

I would be willing to bet the price of the 'cheapo' driver that if you reshafted it to match the 983 you would get very similar results for a mere fraction of the cost of the new driver. Better yet, match a quality shaft to your swing and you should outperform the 983. The shaft is the engine of the club - without a good shaft, the best head in the world is useless.

For a good shaft similar to the one on the 983K I am looking near $170 just for that.

The price that I mentioned earlier on($140) is for one that is almost brand new. Dont forget that these clubs are already one model old and now the 905R are about to come out soon.
I am pretty sure that you can get a decent one for even $100 through ebay. Even still, I think $50 is a decent saving without too much effort.

I am a bit worried about the shaft on the 983K I am looking at, it has the 4560 shaft in regular flex, I don't know how fast I swing or anything so it'll be hard picking a shaft.

How far do you say you hit your drives? From your swing, it doesnt look like an overly fast swing. Anything from an R or an S in my opinion. Maybe thats why you hit the R good.
Try looking at those custom clubs fitting on the web (or shafts manufacturer). It will ask you to put in how far you hit your drives and gives you at least a rough idea of which shaft flex you should be using.

I still think that $300 is a bit steep for the 983K though.....

I tested a heap of clubs today, from a MacGregor MACTEC to a Nike. Most of the stiff shafted clubs were terrible for me, and the local golf pro said it was because I do not rip down the club (causing shaft to flex) like alot of golfers, it's like I have a smooth fluid swing without really bending the shaft much. (Hope you understand what i mean).

The 983K is $450-$500 Brand new here, and I got mine in the end for $300 near new with 2 lessons with it as well, so IMO no to bad of a deal.

I used one of those club fitting things online and it said to use a stiff or even a extra stiff shaft. But today I used this device where it measures something and tell you what shaft would be best for you, from 1-6 is senior, 6-14 is regular, stiff is like 14-21, and extra stiff 21-26 or something like that, anyway with my swing I only manage to get 7, and if I put everything into I only just manage 14-15, so I am basically in the Regular flex range.

Also I found the 4560 regular flex shaft to be pretty good, if it needs changing later on in a year or so I will get a new shaft for it.

So I have pretty much made up my mind, and if in a year or so I develope a better swing I may need to move upto Stiff, but until then I think the Rugular does me fine.

And when I hit my drives ok I can hit them about 270-275 yards.

Don't waste your time with on-line tools to analyze what shaft you need. Go see your local professional clubmaker and they will build you a driver that will blow your mind. It's all in matching the shaft to your swing. If your swing is solid, this will show you how much having the right equipment for you can make a difference.
