Stiff vs regular shaft

I'd consider myself still a beginner, and swing speed should fit the regular shaft. I tried the TaylorMade R7 425 today and was shocked that I actually liked the feel of the stiff shaft better. Comparing a normal swing with both shafts, the ball was launching straighter and I felt much more in control with the stiff shaft. Would I be making a mistake to go with the stiff shafts instead?

Stiff shaft = more control but less distance...

I need to keep reading Tom Wishon's Practical Clubfitting, but all signs point to "if you can hit it straight, then keep the stiff".

I have gone to stiff with my driver, I have lost about 15 metres but now putt it where i am aiming. 2 out of 3 times instead of 1 out of 4.

I can hit it straight with the regular too, phew! But most importantly, I can't afford to lose 15m from my drive at this point! :P
