| Re: Grip it and rip it? Great thread, I am with the second option, a more controlled swing usually comes off better, although there is always 20yds spare if I really go at it, but it is 20yds further into the rough. The problem is, as we learn the swing we tend to slow things down, trying to perfect the required moves, most of us forget this and end up to slow. I am like mr change, slow back, slow down but I think of sending everything through at my feet as hard as possible. Ian. p.s It is nice to see someone who is truthfull about yardages.

What i do different from just swinging nice and steady at a nice even pace is i take the club back at a slow pace and then on the frount part of the swing it try to get my arms and my body to move as fast as possible while keeping my balance. However it is very important that you still swing at a speed comfortable for you as if swing too fast you can lose your balance and more ofen than not hit the ball on the toe or heel or catch it thin.

| Re: Grip it and rip it? Although I struggle with tempo and trying not to rip the ball, with the driver I make a conscious effort to really relax my shoulders, forearms, and hands at address. I then proceed to start my back swing with a shoulder turn and shoulder turn only (as opposed to my irons where I tend to start the swing with my arms/hands). Doing so while keeping a quiet lower body and firm right leg (maintaining knee-flex the entire time). When my tempo and timing are good, I can get it out there nicely (on the screws about - 260 - 280). However, if I get to fast or I'm really trying to "go after it"; I tend to get in BIG trouble. Smooth and relaxed equate to a solid tee-ball for me. |

| Re: Grip it and rip it? i regularly hit my drives 300 metres plus.(at least 1 or 2 $a round). for me a hhard full swing is always straighter. the problems occur when you put a 300 metre drive out to the left slicing or out to the right drawing. Its so hard to find a ball that far into the shit! |

| Re: Grip it and rip it? I've had a couple 340 yard drives but that was with a solid tail wind. I'd say I'm a grip it and rip it person. The courses I play are pretty open and rough isn't to much of a penalty here. I usually have 1-2 300 yard drives in a round. But also have a couple of 260 yard drives in a round, I hit a pretty low drives so if I land in the rough I lose my roll and get a lot shorter drive. |

| Re: Grip it and rip it? Hi I am looking for some advice on my driving. I have just changed my driver, I had a Ping G2 with an NVS65S shaft but struggled to hit it over 200 yrds. Now I have an R7 425 with the standard reg shaft (having a slowish swing I thought it was best to move back to a reg shaft). I am now hitting the ball with a carry of 175 - 200 yards! I hit my 7 iron about 130 yrds. I am not convinced the problem is the club, I think it is the power I generate through the swing. I regularly shot in the low 80's, consistently straight (with a little draw at times). My distance throughout my clubs puts me at a disadvantage as I am always playing a mid/long iron into the par fours. Though 9/10 hit the green if I was on a high iron I would be making far more birdies/pars! Any advice on building power in my swing would be appreciated, maybe I am swaying my hips rather than turning? My shoulder turn is full but I feel no tension/coil at the top. No matter how hard I try and hit the ball on the way down I get the same distance! Any ideas gratefully received!

| Re: Grip it and rip it? Hi jcbdb, If you feel no coil at the top even though your shoulder turn is full, then you are very likely overturning the hips as well. And possibly you are losing your right knee flex and spine angle as well. I say this because I'm personally also struggling with these issues :P |
