how far.

I consider my self a BIG hitter. I am wondering how far other ammateur golfers hit. whats your biggest drive(not down a mountain!) or the biggest uve seen by your playing partners.

Last week i drove the 18th (from the back markes) at my course with only a slight breeze. 347m slightly up hill. I drove the greenside bunker inline with the centre of the green... Made a bogey from there

this is something ive always wondered about. why do i hit so far and score so bad. do other goo golfers simply give up the long ball in favour of consistency. What do these long drives say about my swing and my potential??????????

answers to any of these questions would be much appreciated.

Personaly i gave up the long ball and now look for positioning off the tee, I try and setup for a good approach shot. On avg ill drive 245mtrs if i go for it about 265mts but I find that on local courses you dont need too be a long hitter too score low. I concentrate my game mainly on irons and chipping, thats where the shots are. And yes I consider you too be a HUGE hitter.

Re: how far.

Ive only been playing 16 months but last summer i drove a par 4 green at 285 yards but got to say it was more luck than management!
now i play back from the hole trying to place my shot to the green at approx 80 yards i play short courses too so a 220/230yd straight drive is usually the best shot to play.
bunkers what are they? im never long enough to bring them into play normally and i practise my short game more than the long game

Because you dont need to be accurate to hit a long ball off the tee.
Compare the width of the fairway + the rough on each side to the width/diameter of the hole.
If you are off by 10% from the tee you are fine, if you are off by 10% on the green you will never finish the first hole.

Re: how far.

I have had a few drives over 360 yards, but that is much more than average and only come a few times a year when the stars and moon are aligned.

Power and strength only get your ball down the fairway, feel and touch get your ball in the hole.

Chipping used to be the worst part of my game for years. I started golfing with guys who were very good and they gave me a few pointers, now chipping is one of the strongest parts of my game.

Hitting the ball a mile is what comes natural, I power everything in every sport I play. I am not a finesse player, I just don't have 'soft hands' to be good at the finnesse side without tons of practice.

Here's a suggestion: if you are hitting the ball that far consistantly, why don't you join the long drive circuit? Most of the guys there are also huge hitters without a short game as well. No offense, but from what you have posted, it's got to be true. If you could chip and putt with drives that long you'd be playing on the PGA tour.

Re: how far.

My longest drive is probably about 360 yards. I had a pretty strong tail wind though and it rolled quite a ways.

The most impressive drive I've seen was by my playing partner in golf league. 375 yards with a slight tail wind. I guess the most impressive part of it, it was all carry.

Shortknocker, eh? I'm sure you meant yards.

I've hit some 300+ (never on the fly). I average 270. My driver mechanics are garbage. Come to think of it, I'm not pleased with my mechanics, regardless of the club (save the putter).

Re: how far.

My min carry was usually 260 in the absence of wind, getting ~10 yards roll depending on the bounce. When I felt loose, strong, and fast on that day, I had some rounds where I would average 280 with a few 300's when I got the good roll. I have recently changed my driver swing a little to find more fairways. Now my carry distance is 250 (average might be more, but that is my min for determining whether to hit over an obstacle). I haven't had a day yet since I changed where I felt fast.

Does anyone else vary day to day like this? I hit the ball solid on both days, and my irons stay the same (but I am never swinging all out). Like I said, for course management, I have to find a place to land my driver anywhere from 250-280 on each hole, but at least it goes straight.

Re: how far.

with the driver I've hit about 200 m (218 yards)

but I only started playing last december

my main problem is that I always slice to the right
(I don't do this with my irons !!)

Re: how far.

Very good question. If you guys do a half swing, slow swing or whatever, do you think you will be able to achieve 220yds (200m)? I guess what I'm trying to ask is, what is the easiest distance you can achieve?

Reason I'm asking is that as a beginner, I am not able to even get 180m (200yds) with my driver. And that is with swinging hard and getting pretty decent contact with the clubface. I will never even dream of getting 260-280yds, but definitely hope that at least 220yds is achievable one day??

I'm a beginner to (started in december 2005) and I hit 220 yds with my wood 3 and also with my driver the same distance.
I don't try to hit it harder than with my iron.

I do a whole and slow backswing and a fast downswing.
The backswing goes very far; the clubshaft being paralel to my feet behind my head: and from there it's only coming down.

But the golf pro says I've a very fast swing, and that distance will never be my problem.

(ps: I worked out my slice yesterday !! now hitting very straight with woods )
