Open to suggestions

I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions to straighten out a drive. I just bought a new driver. It was custom made by a pro shop. They said its what i needed because my swing speed is so high. But it seems like no matter where i put the ball in my stance, or anything i do makes a difference. Any suggestions?

Hi Wisconscin,
Sounds to me like you need to work on the mechanics of your driving, rather than the actual tool.Experience tells me that the faster one swings, the more problems develop. I spent years wondering about these kind of problems, constantly visiting the pro and always being told the same thing. "Slow it down" If you can develop a habit of slowing the swing down, it is easier to see where the faults lie in the set up, swing plane, grip etc. I dont know if this helps, but try it.
Regards, Robert

Re: Open to suggestions

Thanks I will try it out. Will a guy get the same distance with a slower swing speed? Its kinda weird because a driver really seems to do nothing for my game. I can hit my 3 wood just as far as my driver and my 5 wood about 20 yards less. Shouldnt a driver get you quiet a few yards further than a 3 wood?

hi wisconsin,
i posted this last week

the penny has finally dropped!
ever since starting to play i have had the notion that you must have a driver in your bag and use it as often as possible i now know that nothing could be further from the truth.
i have taken advice from this site on grip, stance, posture trying to cure the slice then as im getting some consistency with my tm e200 i had an accident with it i then bought a mactec nvg and after initial success lost my way with it.
to cut a long story short i went to agd range and cobra were having a demo session i was persuaded to try some clubs so i hit 10 shots with my mactec not one straight all slices and fades i hit 10 with cobra mspeed 3 wood no contest 10 straight shots all over 200 yds ! so i bought one! that going to give me a lot of confidence next time i play.
agd gave me such a good trade in for the mactec so it really is a sound investment.
drivers are a thing of the past for me!

Re: Open to suggestions

Try putting some masking tape on the driver face. You might find you're not hitting the ball in the sweet spot.

Woods have a smaller head which (in my opinion) seem to be easier to line-up.

Re: Open to suggestions

When i impact the ball it goes out about 150 yards and then goes hard right. I cant really play my slice due to the distance it travels after the slice begins.

Re: Open to suggestions

First of all, if this is the only club this happens with may take time to get used to the new club. As mention above, you are cutting across the ball imparting a lot of side spin due to an open clubface. since your initial flight is basically straight, you may be coming into the ball with a slightly out to in path. With a new driver, you may be swinging extra hard and out of your usual tempo as you think the ball should go much farther. In addition, if the shaft is stiff or very stiff, you may be working hard to flex it. In that case, your body may be outracing your arms. without seeing your swing - hard to say. One thing you can try, is to swing more arms than body on the downswing. This may help to square up the club face and get both body and arms in sync. If your left hand grip shows 2 to 21/2 knuckles that is strong enough.

I guess i am not sure what you mean by 2 - 2/12 knuckles showing? Never even heard of that before. Do you mean to overlap my hands in my grip? I know i am just a redneck from wisconsin lol

Re: Open to suggestions

when you grip the club with your left hand, somebody facing you should be able to see 2 knuckles from your index and middle finger. If the ring finger knuckle shows and or the pinkie, then a very strong grip.
