tremendous roll foward

I have heard that the lower the loft the less top spin you will get, it that right? because my 10.5* driver seems to go about 290yds then roll a few yard. but my 15* 3wood i hit about 240 but it rolls FOREVER, at least to 310 it nor further. its launch is alot higher too, i tee the bottom of the ball to the top of the driver/3wood and both have really high trajectory but my 3W is super high you would think it woul have less roll. The only thing I can think of is that the 3W head is lighter than my driver head and so the shaft does not flex as much. in that case I need to get a really stiff shaft on my driver to get that super low spin rate. or do they make small driver heads now.... a 3W size head with 4-7* loft??? I bet I could hit a ball about 390-420 with a 45" shaft too with that nice 100 yard roll!

I even tried to do a punch shot with my 3W and carried it about 150 and it rolled to 280!

Re: tremendous roll foward

Huh? Wha? Whoozat?! Top spin what?

All clubs are designed to produce back spin, not top spin. If you find a way to get top spin off a club, you'll find it doesn't go too far.

It's pretty safe to say that your 3w head is as heavy as your driver head, if not heavier.

The only thing I can think of if you're hitting these clubs side by side and the 3 wood is going longer in total distance is that you're hitting a downslope on the fly with the 3 wood, creating the extra roll - especially if the trajectory is higher than your driver.

I'm really perplexed by what you're telling me here...

I say it too often: If it's golf club shaped, you can play with it.

For the record, I'm a club doctor, not a swing doctor.

Re: tremendoes roll foward

Seems like a lot of roll,

But to answer question, I think that Roll is more if you have draw type spin on the ball as opposed to more of a fade, and a lower trajectory may help as well. I doubt that much it attributable to the 4.5* lower loft, unless you are hitting a nice draw with one and a high fade with the other.

Re: tremendoes roll foward

I deffinatly wasn't hitting my 3w on the downswing because i had a spint tilt to the left and the ball was above the head of the club. if i said top spin i didn't mean that, i meant less backspin. isn't that how long drivers get such distance? i dind't have a launch monitor, but the 3W had to be going about 30-50* high it seems, way up there, and jsut just keep rolling? basically what i am asking is how to get the most foward ball rolling posible while still hitting it with high launch

i have also heard that test have been done and the draw and fade go the exact same distance if hit the EXACT same way..... the only reason draws seem to have more roll is because the tend to have a lower trajectory and fades have a higher trajectory which leads to less roll. so for most people the draw does go farther than the fade because of its lower trajectory

I read that article too and you have to know how to read betweent the lines because you cannot hit a fade and draw the exact same way. same clubhead speed on the ball, put a fade or draw, the draw will go further BECAUSE the club face is pushing as it wraps around the ball while in a fade it is a glancing blow

I think back spin is also effected by the groves of the club as well, but more loft usually equals more spin. (at least that is my understanding) I have heard that having dirt over the groves of a 3 wood or driver can actually help distance (anything else is illegal) not really sure if that is the case or not.

Grooves help gain more backspin only in two situations:

1) Very low swingspeed (think pitches and chips)

2) Grooves channel debris away from between the clubface and ball, ensuring a more ball/face contact, and more distance.

Generally speaking, grooves in and of themselves do not create any appreciable, playable spin on a full swing shot.
