JB holmes

does anyone know how JB gets so much freaking distnace? he doesn't even have that big of a backswing, if jon daly's backswing shaft went to about 5:30, and most pros have shaft angle at about 3:00..... JB holmes backswing shaft angle is at most 12:30-1:00( alittle bit past strait up ), yet i have seen him hit his 3W 334yds and driver 350+ and his 9i 178. he obviously isn't using the lengh of his backswing to develope swing speed, where is he getting all his crazy distance from?

i have a recording of his swing on my pc to show you an example, but don't know how to uplaod it

Re: JB holmes

he is in this months golf digest, it compares his swing to camilo villegas and bubba watson, he does have a short arse swing, he just has incredible arm speed, and good leverage

my dad has a little less than 3/4 swing and he kills shots, but his forearms are like tree trunks

Re: JB holmes

my guess is fast hips and incredibly strong forearms.

Re: JB holmes

yeah he squats and then springs up right before he hits

yeah really strong forearms and fast hips

i tried some of his swings earlier, good control for sure, low trajectory, looks like it would have good roll, would be good for hitting into the wind...only about 20 yards shy of my real swing

Re: JB holmes

realize this, the most important factor in distance is club head speed when the ball leaves the club face. So while his backswing may be short he is actually accelerating through the ball, a large majority of players are decelerating

Re: JB holmes

yea, i have learned that and hit farther than the avg payer, but he is just redicluos. even daly had to use a huge swing length to develop SS. holmes developes incredible SS in a extreamly short distance. that is all i am saying.

dont be decieved, swing length and swing speed dont really go hand in hand. Daly would probably get the same speed if he stopped at parallel. I used to swing past parallel and I now stop short of it and get more distance than before. If you look at daly's back swing, you will notice he crosses the line at the top, if he kept the club pointing down the line he would not be able to get back as far as he does with it crossing the line.

Re: JB holmes

that is true, all i am saying is that there is some formula out there that says speed = acceleration X distance.(i think that is right). and if you can properly acceralte then a longer backswing will go farther technically. but i know that a shorter backswing can help too. the reason short backswings can have power too is if you restrict your hip rotation and get a high x fatoc (angle relation of hip and shoulder turn) you get more power from a short backswing and long backswing usually are leated to letting the hips rotate alot more therefore allowing the shoulders to rotate more which increases you distance, but decreases you x factor. but if one were to swing as far back as daly ( it think tiger is the closest and most flexible) with little hip rotation giving them a big x facor then that longer backswing would result in more SS.

now what i was referring too with holmes short backswing is that his shoulders turn looks good but it seems like he has no wrist cock at all.

Re: JB holmes

If tiger swung back that far, with hip restriction, it would be his last swing, ever. There are advantages to a shorter back swing, you can accelerate at the ball as fast as you want, that is what I do, on a long backswing you can accelerate too fast and decelerate into the ball. If you remember when tiger started working with butch, he shortened his back swing but did not loose any distance. Daly has a gradual acceleration that very few people would be able to pull off.

oh, ok, that makes sense, thanks.

but i thought that wrist cocking was important and i could be wrong, but it appears to me that JB has no wrist cock at all, i am wrong on that?

Re: JB holmes

it looks like that because of his strong left hand grip, there is a 90* angle there and he retains that angle until right before impact
