Irons hit strait, Woods push or slice

Guys,

I've been back playing playing for 1 month after a, YIKES, 20 year layoff. After some book instruction and help from my Father I'm hitting my Irons Strait , high ,and long. I can't seem to get any of my woods to stop pushing or slightly slicing. After some reading I think I may be sliding forward on the downswing or not keeping my head still. Any other ideas? If I hit 30 drivers I'll hit 3 strait and the rest push or slice but All My irons hit strait. Help!!!

Barry

Re: Irons hit strait, Woods push or slice

Hey, Laserman:
Maybe we should discuss getting the clubhead
to the inside so we are clear on what that means.
I won't say it is harder to get the driver to the
inside, and keep it there, than it is the irons; still,
the shorter shaft on the irons means the swing
that lets you hit the ball straight an iron may
not be big enough to get the same results with
a driver.
I'm guessing the cause of the flight is coming
through with an open face. Are you hitting the
ball on the sweet spot?

Re: Irons hit strait, Woods push or slice

Try choking down on the grip down by the shaft for a little more control. Then as you hit them better start working you grip back up a little at a time. Good luck.

Re: Irons hit strait, Woods push or slice

hi puttinone
just a thought, do the woods match the irons in lie and swingweight. if irons are being hit ok then it may be your woods are not matching, ie may be to flat by 1% OR 2% and toe hitting ground opening face a little, or maybe a diffrent shaft flex, get it cheched before you start changing your swing.

Re: Irons hit strait, Woods push or slice

Edshaw,

I think You may have something there. I think I may not be swinging the driver right. I'm conisdering buying a Medicus driver. I have a Medicus 5 Iron and helped ALOT, that and a new grip. I can go out and play now the way I'm hitting the irons but I don't want to tee off on Par 4, and 5s with a 3 Iron. I'm hitting my 3 Iron far but not that far. I guess I'm reaching out 200-225 yards on a 3 iron. If I could staiten out this driver I'd be ready to go. After some practice I noticed that I'm leaving the face open and swinging a bit in to out with the woods. No, I don't think I've hit the sweet spot once yet. I've tried a grip for a slicer with the Vs pointed more to the right shoulder but that's not helping so I'm either twisting my wrist open or swinging in to out.

Re: Irons hit strait, Woods push or slice

Barry:
Let's talk about getting the face square.
Choking down on the club like was suggested
shortens the shaft. Try that and report back
on it. That's a quick fix. I'd like to talk about
making the turn; that may have permanent
results.
I don't like the term "shoulder turn" because
it is a little misleading. The arms continue to
draw back after the "torso and shoulder unit"
have gone through ninety degrees, which they
should have done by the time the hands reach
waist level.
Make the distinction between the takeaway and
the finish of the backswing. Try and have the
trunk and shoulders fully turned by the time the
hands have reached waist level. That is, have
the left shoulder under the chin at the point
the takeaway has been completed.
Where are you contacting the ball? Put some
talcum powder on the ball to find out, or
look at the tee marks on the sole.
This dude has it down:

Re: Irons hit strait, Woods push or slice

hi all
jack nicklaus said tiger woods is using the wrong driver and thats why he is not getting the results, his mind is on how far and not on being in play.
jack said this last week after the open, he says it was not so much about good planning but more about tiger not being able to hit his driver with any confedence, that he only used it the once.
bill.

Re: Irons hit strait, Woods push or slice

Check the setup for your woods

1) Grip - strength of grip 2/10, both v's should go to the right shoulder, left hand the shaft should rest below the fat pad of the palm and right hand more in the fingers
2) Alignment check to see both foot line and target line are parallel to each other and facing the target.
3) Stance - check the address postion of this website.

This a a place to start as most problems stem from the setup. Hope this helps, mike.

Re: Irons hit strait, Woods push or slice

I had (sometimes still have) the same problem. Exactly. I am now hitting my irons better than I ever have done, but my driver (which WAS the best part of my game) went to pot.

I started adopting a draw position for my drives (As well as buying a draw bias driver). I aim my whole body slightly right of the target, but I keep my club square to the target. I then swing as normal and it produces a straight or slightly drawn drive. This has really helped me drop my scores and most importantly made me enjoy the game more.

Smile Re: Irons hit strait, Woods push or slice

Guys,

This problem has been rectified. My Father came to Florida to visit and help me out. First of all my grip was wrong. I swiched from a weak to a strong grip. 2ndly, I slowed my backswing down even furthur. 3rd I have been learning to keep my head still and not looking up after contact with the ball. This is a hard habit to stop but I'm getting much better at it. Lastly but most important I was not following through after contact with the ball. I would hit the ball and stop, causing my ball to start to the right. I find if I concentrate on keeping my head still, swing much slower and follow through getting my hips thru the shot and my belly pointing at the target at the finish that I can hit my Driver strait and well. Playing 9 holes the other day I hit a Strait drive 270 yards which really blew me away because I didn't feel like I hit that shot in the sweat spot. Now, If I concentrate on these things my Woods are strait, high and long.

Barry
