Re: how far? My first answer was obviously ridiculous. I was thinking of an article I read some time ago that came up with a ratio (#' of 1.5-2.2) of ( I'm guessing now swing speed to distance) but I can't remember. Liam - I think the machine you measured this on was not correct. I've seen your swing and your fathers - much faster than 70 or 73 MPH. They are more likely in the 90-100 range.

Re: how far? To give you a GOOD idea of how far you need to hit the ball, here is a link to golf course distances as played in the Junior World Championships and most other junior tournaments around the world. If you can play well on courses this long and reach par4's in 2, you don't have a problem with distance off the tee. http://www.kelrosagolf.com/academy/tipshome.htm Towards the bottom is a Junior Section and there you'll see a title "Juniors Should Play Correct Hole Lengths".

Re: how far? Just to update Liam's woes he has now been put on the Back (white) mens competition tees. Playing of 24.1 now still only 10. Best round this year 87, best result, Astbury 36 hole junior open 52 competitors, won the morning best net 24+ h/capps playing off 24 with a level round. Oh and he's hit it about 220yds all summer, or 40 paces behind me which is now becoming a worry.........!! Well done Son. Dad.

Re: how far? Wow, in the metropolitan pga junior 8-11 year old foward tees and nine holes only 12-14 year old middle tees 15-18 year old back tees. The cutoff for age is july 29th. 10 years old seems early to move to the middle tees. You want to get juniors to score well so they know they can do it. Regarding preivous idiotic posts I make on this chain, what I was thinking of was the ratio of ball speed to club head speed. I think they refer to this as the smash factor. You want to get this as close to 2 as possible. a ratio of 1.5-1.6 is excellent. Obviously you will need a machine to measure all this.

Re: how far? swing as hard as you can while keeping control over where the balls ends up When you lose control, dial it back a bit Straight is infinitely more important than long. (I just got beaten by a 72 year old guy off 7 who hit his drives a maximum of 200yrds and was still level par after 7 holes)

| Re: how far? Wow - I don't know how I lost this thread for so long. As has been posted - a 73 mph swing speed cannot produce 220 yards without rock-hard fairways and about 70 yards of roll. Now, 100 mph with a level AoA and a 10° driver puts him nicely in the 220 carry range. Liam, I hear it all the time about how I should be hitting it further - and I'm a grown man (well, overgrown, but that's another story). msklar- yes, you're referring to smash factor - the ratio of ball speed to clubhead (swing) speed. Most amateur golfers have a smash factor of less than 1.3. Most good amateurs (single digit cappers) have a factor somewhere between 1.3 and 1.5. Virtually all pros have a smash factor of 1.5 or better. But IIRC, it's tough to get beyond 1.5. Bubba has a smash factor of 1.63, but has crazy clubhead speed, and tees the ball a) way up in the air, and b) way forward in his stance. More importantly than how far should you hit it is how far do you hit it? Knowing your distances will help you score better (but playing driver-3 wood-mid-iron is tough!)
