Re: Drills for building club head speed

Hey fellas!

To summarise the main theme of this thread - technique is better than strength for huge drives. And I agree whole heartedly. Look at the pro's in any sport and you'll see that their technique is what gives the majority of the power. I used to be able to kick a football 70m once upon a time, but never did any weights or training. Just kicked a lot of balls.

Look at Tiger Woods at Nike Swing Portrait (http://www.nike.com/nikegolf/swingportrait/). He isn't built like a tank, but he can hit the ball a long long way. Ok, his ability is freakish, but my bet is he doesn't do a lot of weights, just hits a lot of golf balls.

The other thing is that it doesn't matter how far you can hit the bloody thing, if it's in the bush 100m from the hole it's a lot harder to score well, than if it lands on the fairway 120m from the hole. Accuracy. The ability to putt well. Probably more important than the long drive.

Thoughts?

Cheers,

millenniumcow

Re: Drills for building club head speed

We know that clubspeed doesn't mean you need to whack the ball harder with more brute force. I found the "Rope" method by Jim Christine (Respected UK teacher) quite effective, using a piece of thick rope for club swing drill to improve rhythm and tempo which in turn creates more clubspeed with less effort.

The length should be slightly touching the ground, adjusted to suit your height. Pretend that you are holding a club and do the upswing. At the top of the swing, the end of the rope should be just under your left armpit (for righthanders). Start the downswing, feel the rope, it should build up speed constantly. Imagine you are cracking a whip at the point of ball contact. This is where you want the maximum speed to be at. You should get a "swooshing" sound if you got the right tempo and rhythm.

Hope that is of some help to you.

Such a large drop in such a short time would indicate that you have changed your swing. Likely there is something mechanically inefficient with you golf swing that needs to be fixed. Check my your local pro. Or send in a video of your swing.
