Just hit it !

Maybe I am like a good wine or a fine single malt from my homeland, I seem to be getting better with age. I do feel that when we get on the first tee on the golf course we tend to over do it with swing thoughts, I'm not saying we all do this but I'm sure we have played enough golf to have seen this happen. I watch the top players and for the most part they all do the same thing, they finish the backswing and swing right through the ball and finish high. On the tee that is my only thought, at the top of my backswing my back is to the target and I want to finish with my belt buckle facing the target and my hands above my left shoulder. I can belt out my Pro-V's 275-280 yards on a regular basis and keep it in play, at my age ( 62 ) I am playing better than I did thirty years ago when I had a seven handicap and really enjoying the challenge the course puts up. The new technology is fantastic, balls, clubs and shafts what a great equaliser when you get to my stage in my golf. For me keeping the brain fairly quiet and out of it for the most part is something that works for me. I had my first sub par round in many years a few days ago when I shot a 71 on a new course playing 6580 yards par 72.

Re: Just hit it !

Sounds like you are in a happy place...it's a good place to be. Congratulations on the 71. Keep this up and in about 6 or 7 years, you might shoot your age!

I agree about your swing thoughts and that is probably one of the more effective ways to putting together a good round..."keeping the brain fairly quiet". I like that extra adjective "fairly", because it seems like you are saying you still need to think about it a bit from time to time. Saying you have to keep your brain quiet all the time doesn't allow for greater thought at times of difficulty. And it also allows for a few swing thoughts to get in there to keep you in check.

Good post.

Re: Just hit it !

I don't suffer with first tee thoughts or nerves these days, some time ago I used to be almost physically sick prior to standing on the first tee box and my head would be full of strategies and concerns for a day leading up to a competition. Maybe you are correct in that it is an age thing, I am just a few years your junior and enjoy my game very much, it's just that my back is my great leveler these days, I am still striving for improvements though.

I do try to conserve mental energy, it is easy to burn it all up part way through a round and start to lose focus and concentration when deciding how to manage the course.

Congratulations on the 71.

Re: Just hit it !

I'm slowly working this game out Gents. On the course it is in between the ears. I'm working hard on clear keys. It seems to be paying some dividends on course.

Keep up the good hitting grandpa's (excluding greg of course)
