Talking My P iron is missing - do I need it ?

Greetings from a new member, just a question, had lessons from a Pro yesterday on 8 iron etc, and we looked for my P pitching iron, and discovered I do not have one, must have lost at some stage, I had got B-square set at good value in LIDL store here in Ireland.
I have survived up to now as a learner, my question is, can I work round, should I get a new one quickly, P for pitching I suppose.

Re: My P iron is missing - do I need it ?

Yes and no, the importance of weges is to basically have the distances covered from inside 100 yds, without any major gaps.

Do you have any other wedges?

If not at some point to really improve your score your going to need to a 3 wedge set -PW around 48*, SW around 52 and a LW-56-60. I do not think you need it right away though if I would choose 1 it would be the SW. which you should be able to use out of bunkers, chipping .... But you can get by with using a 8 or 9 for a while.

Hi Glash

As Ogallabob says sooner or later you'll need to sort out your wedges - we had a discussion on here a while back about which club people would most miss, sparked off by a really miserable round I'd without my PW.

Re: My P iron is missing - do I need it ?

In this clubmaker's opinion, if you want to score, you'd not only better find a P wedge, but also a G (or A) wedge as well!

Lots of traditionalists don't like gap wedges (or approach wedges as they're sometimes known). The set they had in the early 80's didn't have one, so why do they need one now? The answer to that is that the set from the early 80's had the loft of the P wedge the same as the loft on the modern G wedge. What does this mean? Well, loft is the #1 determiner of distance. Want to hit your 5 iron further? Strengthen it to the loft of your 4 iron. Guess what happens when you do that? It goes about as far as your 4 iron. Guess what iron manufacturers have been doing for the last 30 years? Strengthening the lofts, but not changing the number stamped on the sole of the club! This is why your new Big Bertha 2008 7 iron goes just as far as your 1996 X-16 6 iron that goes just as far as your 1984 X-12 5 iron. Check out the clubs! They'll be within an inch of each other for length, and within a degree of each other for loft.

So, for the sake of full-swing yardage gaps, yes, you'll need your PW. And if the pro tells you that you don't need a gap wedge, find a new equipment specialist.

Smile Re: My P iron is missing - do I need it ?

Many thanks for such helpful replies from Ogallibab, bdbl, lowpost42.
I feel I am in safe hands in this forum with such advice.
I will certainly get the P wedge and a few more. At the moment I have 9 iron, and S wedge. I noticed its absence today at a game , and realise it is very useful for use within last 100 yards for more accuracy.

But first I need find this P wedge matches existing set of clubs, and will be taking on all the advice received so far.

Re: My P iron is missing - do I need it ?

bringing up an old post here.

a P wedge is a much needed tool. apart from the putter and driver it is probably my next most used club...

without it i'd be stuck as my SW hits about 80m and my 9i hits about 135m. thats a big difference. my P wedge gets me that middle range between 90m on 1/2 a stroke and 125m of a full shot.

not to mention chipping around the green.

alternatively, buy a G wedge... 52degree.

Talking Re: My P iron is missing - do I need it ?

Aussie Boy,
Many thanks, the more experience I have gained getting close to that hole, has confirmed its necessity. I am looking at this club in various stores, and will make the plunge some time soon.
