The Hammer, is it bs or can it work???

I just seen a thing on tv about a driver called the Hammer that is supposed to be able to add up to 50 yards to your drive. I was just wondering if anyone had heard of or tried this driver before. It just seems like a load of ****, but ya never know...

Thanks all,
Doug

Re: The Hammer, is it bs or can it work???

I have a couple of golfing friends with "old timers" disease, who in their quest to find more distance bought this club. Based on their expieriences, you are right. This infomercial could very well be considered a pile male cow fecal matter. Of course my friends have not yet mastered the "yelling" part of the swing, so maybe that is a requirement they need to work on. I have swung their "hammer clubs", and found nothing to write home about, just as they have. That being said, in the right hands you never know. GJS

Hi Doug,

When you look up "gimmick" in the dictionary, there's a picture of the Hammer, in all its incarnations.

Hi LowPost42,

Having said what you said, it speaks for the gullability/desperation of people or the sales pitch is so well orchestrated, that they probably sold a million dollars of that thing.

To be fair Ted you could say much the same about the big OEMs.

On a rough calculation if I'd upgraded every model year for the last 5-10 years I'd have gained about 100 yards driving distance and have the directional control of an Exocet missile.

Perhaps that's where I've gone wrong - now where's my credit card

Re: The Hammer, is it bs or can it work???

It never ceases to amaze me that people continue to try and buy a game!

The most common of which seems to be the "offset" club to aid in curing a slice. I've never seen any habitual slicer bet any better by buying offset or fatshaft clubs. If you slice it, you gotta change the action, not the club.

No club will hit it straighter, no ball flies straighter. Anyone believing otherwise needs a shot of reality in the head. The fact that these companies can "back it up" with "science" is also laughable because it's science they made up to try and fit their selling point. It's not because "you're worth it".

I remember my old man saying years ago after seeing one of these averts like "you'll never hit a straighter ball/more fairways, more greens" etc etc that he would question how straight the ball was if he aimed into the bushes 90 degrees to the right of the tee box and let one rip (a drive that is, not a bottom burp).

According to the advert BS, it made it seem like you could hit it with a strand of cooked spaghetti and you'd be long and straight.

It's a hard game. You can't buy one. It only rewards through hard work and diligence.

Re: The Hammer, is it bs or can it work???

Hi Neil and bdbl,

Amen about the hype re the annual, sometimes bi-annual, releases of the new equipment lines.

They are only as good as the golfers, who wield them. Otherwise, why would they turn up at "Play It Again Sports" and Ebay, used and abused, so frequently. I've seen many that are in fair condition, except the crown/face edges have ball chips and scratches, and there are skymarks on the crown. You look at the soles, and you see the range mat streaks or scratches from the ground running in 30 degrees out to in angles.

The adverts should have a disclaimer, that these are pretty good equipment, but only marginally better than previous years, so instead of buying these take some lessons, or work diligently and purposefully on your mental and physical game, which will do you far more good.

Ted

Re: The Hammer, is it bs or can it work???

hi
if it was that good then why don't the pro's all use them as they all want more distance.
Angel at August hit one drive 336 yards does that mean that if other people buy his driver that they will hit that far. somehow i don't think so.
cheers
Bill

Hi Bill,

He's a monster, isn't he. People talk about Perry's age, but Angel is not far off.
I think a lot has to do with his relaxed mental and physical attitude. He is not bound up with either.

I believe he plays the 7.5 degree Rapture. There are not many casual golfers who can handle the 7.5, but regardless even with a 10.5 Rapture, it's not that high tech state of the art equipment that will help the majority of casual golfers.

Re: The Hammer, is it bs or can it work???

hi Ted
yes he had a rapture 7.5 driver and a rapture2 3 wood he also had a G10 2 iron but the rest of his irons 3=wedge were S57s. 56%wedge and 60% wedge were tour-W and tour-TS seemed like he went for more forgiveness in his 2 iron as its a cavity back where the S57 are more blade/muscle back.
it was a G10 2 iron and not the I10 blade type.
i think L Ochoa has the same in her bag apart from the 2 iron.
i played for years with a 8% ping eye2 driver and loved how it never went above the tree top and was great for links golf where you got lots of run even on a fade.
cheers
Bill

Re: The Hammer, is it bs or can it work???

The bigger problem is that all the golf magazines, and network TV allow these advertisements that claim "longer & straighter" for swing training devices, clubs, and balls. These informational outlets know these claims are suspect, but the advertisement dollars these companies provide are more important than the actual facts. The uninformed will believe what they read , and hear from these golf outlets as the truth. By the time the uninformed realize what is, and is not true, they have already wasted a small fortune on suspect commercials that offer the promises of lower scores. GJS

Re: The Hammer, is it bs or can it work???

according to the "hammer" commercial, the driver is distinctly different from others mainly because it is an upside-down version of the Callaway Big Bertha. if you have watched the entire thing in the middle of the night you will notice that all the people who they interview end up saying that the "hammer" is far better than the Callaway club. Either they are trying to bash callaway drivers or callaway was the only driver that the "hammer" could compete with.
