Shaft Question

Hello,

Is it worth the money to buy clubs with graphite shafts or would I be better off sticking with the standard iron shafts. I'm very new to the game, so I don't know what my swing speed is or any of that. The only reference I could give is I hit a 3 wood off the tee about 230 yrds. The clubs I use now have steel shafts and they are a little old (hand-me downs from Dad). Being this new to golf should I even invest in clubs? I'm looking at low cost clubs, nothing to fancy. Does anyone know anything about Pinemeadowgolf? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Best advice is wait until you have grooved your own swing. If you are just looking for a cheap set, then you already have one! If one day down the raod you decide to take your game to the next level and you decide you want to invest in a decent set, then get a set of irons made to your specs.

I'd suggest you wait a bit to get some basic techniques and consistent rhythm and then invest in a better set of clubs.

Graphite shafted irons have advantages and disadvantges ... like everything else but the answer lies in testing both out and seeing which results in a better strike and result. If you hit a 3 wood 210 yards, my guess would be start with steel shafted irons.

I actually put their 'bladed irons' in my bag just before I went to play in Europe in easrly 2004. Not expensive but VERY good quality. I'll second Gord - spend some cash on lessons (good ones), get a swing, then get fitted for clubs.

Pinemeadow makes some great clubs - my brother in law has been enjoying his set for a year now, and I've been jealous for a year.

Great feedback. Thanks for the help. How much should I be paying for lessons and how often should I take them? I live in New Bern, NC. Anyone know any instructors? Thanks again.

Go to: The Emerald Golf Club, 5000 Clubhouse Dr., New Bern (252) 633-4440. There is a really good pro there, Jerry. He has his assistant Chris that will start you out for a great $25/half-hour lessons. After that, you can move up to Jerry who will charge more, but starting out all you want is the basics, and assistants can provide that, no problem. The number of lessons depends on the number of times you can practice between them. Don't take another lesson until you get at least 4 hours of dedicated practice for every 1/2 hour tought. This does not include playing on the course. This is strictly doing the drills and hitting balls on the range. Ask questions about lessons plans, pay-in-advance rates...etc. Save 5$ here and there will help you out in the long run.
