I Dont Get It!!!

Hi everyone I am new to Golf-Tuition-Online, and even newer to the game of golf. I have never swung a golf club and now that I'm trying to learn I dont know where to start. First of all I need to know what each golf club means, I saw the other thread about what each number means, but what is a wood, iron, puter, and all that other stuff? I plan to go to the driving range soon and what club should I use for it? And one last thing, what is a birdie?

Firstly a wood? Is the bigger rounder head clubs, these hit further. Called this because the head used to be made of wood now you can get all sorts of metal heads.
Secondly a iron? This is the slim head club with varing degrees of loft. The higher the number on the sole of the club the higher you will hit the ball, however the higher you hit the ball the shorter the distance it will travel.
Thirdly a putter? this is usually the shortest club in the golf bag and has a straight face (no grooves) and is for use on the green (putting surface) this club rolls the ball along the ground over short distances.

A birdie is one under par for example when you look at the score card if the par is 4 then a birdie would be 3 (3 shots to get the ball in the hole from tee)
The tee is the starting point for each hole.
As for what club to use at the driving range I would go for a 5 or 6 iron, they are easier to swing than a wood and will get the ball airbourne quite easy.

Best piece of advice I can give you: get lessons from a golf instructor. Who's a good instructor? Phone a few of the local courses and ask who a good instructor is. I myself was self taught and low and behold, 18 years later, I have self tought myself out of all the bad habbits I started with. Don't get into the bad habbits. Start right be seeing an instructor.

Being self taught is something to be proud of. but improving quickly is even more to be proud of. I became a scratch bowler in tenpin bowling, and I was self taught that took me 7 years to acheive. I have seen others who came into the game later and get better than me because they started with lessons.


So This sport Golf I started with lessons on my full swing I have improved my full swing very very fast. hehehe I now need lessons on my short game.

So get yourself lessons.

Thanks everyone for the help. Im joining the golf club at my school, so I am starting off pretty young. I hope that I can get better and better so I will be good one day. I will try my best and get a golf instructor to teach me, I just don't have much time, I'm always pretty busy and I am a student so my money supply isn't great. I played my first game of golf yesterday and it was great, I loved it except for the fact that I looked so stupid when every other person looked like Pros compared to me. I have had alot of trouble hitting the ball straight, I always hit it to the right(I'm a righty). Does anyone have suggestions?

After a few more rounds of golf you will have some sort of swing that a coach can help with, in the mean time just play.
Its really hard to other someone advice when they've just started playing the game, so don't try too hard at the moment just relax a little.
This is where I could get alot of flack from the people on GTO. However, I am not one that believes in getting lessons straight away.Play 5-10 rounds have some fun then look for a lesson.Having said that you have to have the correct grip right from the beginning anyone in the pro shop will show you this for free.
The grip is the number 1 "must do correct thing in golf".

Not flack necessarily, but with the assumption that everyone wants to get good, fast.

I went the route of a few rounds without a lesson, then got my clubs regripped (and got a lesson thrown in), then spent a couple dozen rounds without a serious lesson. The game became much more fun for me once I took a serious lesson and suddenly had a 'golf swing', or at least, more of a golf swing than before (and certainly no longer a baseball swing).

This is why I advocate lessons early - before you're trying to fight too many ingrained bad habits!
