Can't Hit Fairway Woods

Hi to All,

I played a round of golf on Monday and would have scored lower had it not been for my 3-wood and 5-wood. Of the number of times that I used them, only twice were the shots long and straight. The rest of the time the ball flew maybe a foot off the ground and traveled anywhere from 50 to 100 yards. I'll admit that part of the problem is my mind set that believes that I have to "kill" the ball to get any distance from these types of clubs. So any advice/suggestions you can lend as to how to use these clubs properly would certainly be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Jack

Re: Can't Hit Fairway Woods

Jack,

You just mentioned your own problem right there, trying to "kill" the ball. If your other shots with other clubs are already fairly decent, let the club work and swing the same like your short irons (as long as you dont try to kill them too).
Are you hitting it fat or thin?
- Just try to keep your head steady and keep your eye on the ball
- Think tempo.

Same here, and I've become pretty consistent with it. I used to carry a similarly lofted 5 wood, but I just couldn't get the hang of it. I'd take both clubs to the driving range and work on them side by side to see if I could get the fairway wood to work for me, but it wasn't happening. And when, occasionally, I would get a good shot, it was essentially the same shot I was getting pretty consistently with the hybrid. Finally it dawned on me that there was no earthly reason to struggle with the 5 wood to make the same shot that I could make with my hybrid without struggling. So I don't carry the 5 wood anymore.

BRAVO!

If you're getting the same distances, then by all means drop the 5W.

Re: Can't Hit Fairway Woods

Is everyone sweeping with a fairway? I had trouble in the past with sweeping and this year I started trying to come down on the ball with much better success.
