Swing speed tips

I can carry my driver about 240-260yds. But I swing sooooo slow. from start to finish my swing will take longer than one second. I figure if I can hit it so far with such a slow tempo, so I speed up the tempo, and barley hit it 200yds. It looks and feels so efortless, I dont't feel any coil that I hear people talk about. Any suggestions are greatly appretiated

Re: Swing speed tips

skywalker, go with your natural tempo. You're probably making good contact with it. Your swing may change subtly when you speed up and you may be missing the sweet spot, releasing the club early, or both.

Re: Swing speed tips

igsky,
lowpost is right. if you try to increase your natural tempo, odds are that you will increase error. Look at ernie ells. Hardly puts in effort. but if you study his swing you will see its all in the rhythm and timing. forget power.
hope this helps
Robert

Re: Swing speed tips

thanks for the tips. Is there another way to increase swing speed or getting more distance other than increasing tempo?

Re: Swing speed tips

You need swing the club at a speed that allows every mechanic to fall in its place. If you swing too quick every thing will be out of sequence.

Swing at a speed that allows you to finish balanced. If you can't achieve this - your rythym is no good.

The only suggestion I can make regarding adding length, is take a longer club.

rythym + timing = tempo

Re: Swing speed tips

If your drives are straight and true, try using a lower loft. This will allow the ball to hit the ground running by not holding up in the air so long.

Carry is king.

If I get 250 by 220 carry and 30 roll, or I get 250 by 245 carry and 5 roll, I'll take the latter every time.

Roll is just so unpredictable.

To add - too little loft without enough spin will actually decrease overall distance.

Re: Swing speed tips

Hi lgskywalker,

I have exactley the same thing as you, when i swing slow i will rareley miss a fairway and usually hit a respectable 230 / 260 yrds and as you say I too do not feel any coiling.
any time that I speed up I lose distance, and people who I play golf with who dont know me are amazed at my tempo they always say my swing looks so good. but as all us golfers cannot help trying to get a little xtra distance, then my swing will fall apart, so I suppose its true to say that tempo is absoluteley key to a good repeating swing, I have a post on here to all the big hitters have a look there is some good feedback.

Re: Swing speed tips

I am kind of answering my own question... but I went to the range today after watching Nicluas on tv and I found that I can increase my tempo ALOT more with good control if I keep the club in the middle of my arms or equally between both arm as seen here
http://www.golfswing.com/proswings/nicklaus.htm

not trying to compare my horrible swing to Jacks, but with the added stablitly I feel with the club "in the middle" I increased my tempo and gained an extra 80yds! from 200 to 280. Now I need to buy a new driver, because my swing speed increased so much I need a stiffer shaft. I hope sharing that "feeling" helps others inprove as much as I did.
