Please comfort me (wah!!) well I started out full of optimism (as we do) before my weekly Sunday round of golf. The day before I was hitting practise shots beautifully. after the first hole I had taken 6 strokes (I was really happy 'cos for me that is as good as a par at this early stage in my golfing life) . From then on that was it - I stopped scoring my card after taking 9 on a par 3 and having double figures on all the other holes I'd recorded. I guess the whole round ended up near 150 . I am laughing now but at the time I started to get really embarrased. Please comfort me with your golfing horror storiesAnd never mind.. there's always next week

Re: Please comfort me (wah!!) My experience was the opposite. I went to the range before a round, sprayed the ball all over. Went home dejected. Went out that night, shot a personal best. Go figure.

Re: Please comfort me (wah!!) I just started playing golf a couple of weeks ago and was invited to join a church group to play my first 18 holes. So, brand new to the church, and with a set of clubs given to me by a friend, I gleefuly set off to ruin my athletic reputation in one fell swoop. Out of the 12 guys who showed to play, none would take the first shot... so the "newbie" got the honors. I took a couple of pathetic warm-up shots, noticing nothing good or bad about any of them, then steped up to the ball. I took a nice long backswing and "whack!"... The ball must have landed 45 degrees right of my stance and 160 yards away... fortunately for me, the hole was a hard dog-leg left, making the ball almost the same distance from the hole as when I started. Every tee shot from that point on was exactly the same. Finally a guy on my team said, "Travis, I think that the only thing that could possibly fix that swing is prayer and fasting." I haven't eaten since. ![]()

Re: Please comfort me (wah!!) Thank you traction. That is exactly the kind of help I was looking for . Perhaps you could get the church group to include a 2 minute silent prayer in their services for all of us golfers for whom a handicap of 28 would be a dream.

Re: Please comfort me (wah!!) Our first is a long par 3. Off the blues it used to be about 190m. For the first 50m or so all along the right hand side (maybe 5-10 feet from the fairway, literally 2 feet from the right hand side of the tee) is the car park. the car park full of Mercs and BMW's.. In front of the tee box is the main road up to the clubhouse, usually a couple of cars waiting right at the box for you to tee off. Did I mention that most members are driving mercs and BMW's? I will let you all fill in the rest... ![]()

| Re: Please comfort me (wah!!) I once tried a shot with a friends new driver. Not being used to a big headed driver, I teed it way too low. Someone pointed this out to me and advised me to tee high. I borrowed a 4 inch tee and teed er up. I then proceeded to take my best swing ever. Unfortunately, this time I teed it up too high. The tee flew, but the clubhead went completely under the ball which popped straight and landed about a foot behind where I had teed it. Second shot one foot behind where I teed off. That's embarrassing.

Re: Please comfort me (wah!!) Although I am a pretty good golfer, but not great, a poor shot is always a bit of a downer. I was at a golf course earlier this year where the early morning starter is a complete egotistical moron. If you screw up on the first tee, it seems he feels it is his duty to chastise you properly in front of those playing in your group. He and I have had words before about this when he has done it to other golfers. Anyway, I am golfing with 3 guys that I did not know since I was a walk on that morning. We are playing from the tips as decided by the other three players. First hole is about 430+ yards. I am up first and proceeded to top my tee shot which went about 20 yards coming to rest on the ladie's tee box. Knowing what I know, I tell the starter to hush himself before he has a chance to say anything. Now I know it was a bad first shot, and not normal for me, but no one else knows that. When I get to my ball, I take some good natured ribbing about playing from the ladies' tee, and I become known as "Pops" by my three companions. Low and behold I top my second shot for about another 30 yards. Now I am wondering what heck is going on, and my playing friends are beginning to figure I am old man who is going to be holding them up the rest of the round. Long story short. I triple bogey the first hole, and was 6 over after 4 holes. However, I was able to right my swing and finished up with +3 (75) playing at a -3 over the next 12 holes. GJS
