Hybrids

I bought a 3 and 4 hybrid. I have never used hybrids before but they were on sale. I can it my 3I and 4I long and straight. So what will the 3h and 4h do for my game? how much farther will they fly than the irons?

Is it a sign of weakens that a big strong guy like me is hitting a hybrid?

What do most people carry in their bags in the way of irons vs hybrids?

Good for you to get a bargin on your hybrids and hopefully I will answer your 4 questions.

Question 1 & 2) As how a hybrid will effect your game. The reason hybrids are greatly used now, is that with a hybrid, you have more options on where to use it. A hybrid in your bag is just another tool to help you obtain good results. They help in 2 ways, with first one, they have extra weight at the back of the club face. This allows you to use it in rough terrain, as if you use an iron would probably get caught up and change the swing path / face of the club hitting the ball. So that you dont control its direction plus loss of power hitting the ball which will loose you distance.
The second benifit which you will see is what you have said increase in distance. This however will depend on how you swing the club. Most people see the hybrids as fairway woods, which is understandable as they look like one, but this is wrong. They are still an iron at the end of the day but with a bit more weight further back, so to hit one dont change your swing for it just hit it like you would with your 3 & 4 normal irons.

Question 3) Does it show weakness. Well this is a big NO in fact I would bet that you will drop a few strokes of your game because of it. Due to the fact that it could save you in problem areas. Just think of the options it would give you.

Question 4) Whats in your bag. Well I have a hybrid that replaces my 3 iron but I still carry my old 3 iron in my bag because of more choice in distance when I am playing. Infact I have removed my 7 wood from my bag as I get better control with my hybrid for shaping shots.

How have the hybrids been working out your you?

I picked up my first one a few months back and I had a heck of a time hitting it. It's a hybrid 5 iron lots of loft - I think 29 degrees or so - and the head if like a fairway wood - even my instructor was a little perplexed on how I should swing it.

I got some good advice here and I have been swinig nit like an iron and I have had much better results - so much so - that I hardly use my 5 iron. Not all hybrids are equal - some are geared for lower handicapped players (like some Adams) while others are geared for higher handicapped players like me.

I have a couple of hybrids (2 and 3 iron replacements) and have been very happy with them.

The benefits are that they are more versatile (such as knock down shots) better from various types of lies, fly higher and land softer and are easier to work the ball in a controlled manner. The only downside is that I am more accurate from a perfect lie with my long irons.

I don't see having hybrids as being an admission of weakness. I hated my 5 wood for not being as accurate as an iron but not having the length I want from a wood so I was happy to swap it for a 16 degree hybrid. My 19 degree hybrid is sometimes swapped for my 3 iron when when the conditions are really good but that's fairly rare.
