Re: If you're not an American......

Here are the problems I see with the coverage.
They do focus too much on the big names. Before during and after any tournament.
The lesser known guys dont get hardly any coverage so when the big names are not in a tournament nobody has heard of the guys in it.
I would like to see every tee shot Bubba Watson hits in a tourney but they hardly ever show him bombing it.Instead they show guys trickeling in 3 footers for par.....yawn.
I guess everybody has their complaints.

Re: If you're not an American......

[quote=james.welsh]Golf coverage is always focussed on the big names. Apparently if Tiger doesn't make the cut the ratings for the tournament tank right away. Which is why they let him move loose impediments like boulders.

Yeah, and if Tiger does not want to play in your tournament, then you have an impossible time to find advertising revenue, TV converage and make a go of it. That is why the International tournament in Denver is now defunct. Even though Els and a few big names played ever year it could not remain wihtout the big sponsers and they would not unless Tiger played every other year.

Re: If you're not an American......

James Welsh: Did you catch the Exxon Mobil
ad announcing that Phil Mickelson is now
working for Exxon Mobil as part of public
relations?
Hey, The Masters has always been the
subject of discussion, as has been the
Augusta National. I think they secretly
thrive on the publicity and the mystique,
though they claim to shun publicity.
How about that field? Am I right that
Gary Player "competed" in his 50th
Masters? Hey, Gary Player is a fine
man, but he's there for audience appeal.
Nobody mentions that the place he
occupies could be used by someone
who has a chance to win.
*****ing about The Masters is a
national past time, but no one would
change a thing, especially the cost
per view. In our town, CBS is still
broadcast, i.e., don't have to have cable.
It's a great country!

That's the beauty about the Masters - once you win, you always get a chance to play. He wasn't taking anybodies spot. He didn't make the cut, and the field is as big as it needs to be, to start.

Now, if you want to talk about Michelle Wie playing mens' regular events and taking a spot away...

Not for long. All the TV wavelengths are going to be transferred to be used by wireless networks in the next few years. No more free TV. A not well-known fact. Soon everyone will have to use cable or sat. to see their favourite shows.

The fact is the best way to view a tournament is with TOURcast:

Click on the tutorial link to learn more. I tried a demo of it once.

Re: If you're not an American......

Danger, danger, Lowpost Robinson!!!!!!

Think we've covered miss Wie's "invites" quite enough, lol.

Still agree with you tho ........

The debate isnt about Gary Players right to play in the masters, that is already set in the Augusta National constitution (or something) the real debate is why does a Tournament that is as undemocratic as an invitational have the prestige of a major, such as the Open or US Open, the same could be said of the USPGA since its only available to PGA Members. In the true sense of the word only the Open and Amateur competitions of the US and Britain should be majors really. Lets not forget the 4 Majors were pretty much chosen arbitrarily by a golf writer chatting to Arnold Palmer on the flight home from the British open when he won one in the 60's, not exactly set in stone, Palmer had already won the Open, US Open and the Masters, so they were obviously going to be picked and they probaly thought the USPGA would take umbrage if they didnt include their flagship event.

Low Post, I'm glad you said "play" rather than
"compete." Ben Crenshaw? Come on, now....

For me, it was good to see The Walrus in contention...

I don't recall him ever winning it, so presumably he qualified......

Re: If you're not an American......

hi
i think gary player has earned the right to play and the fact he has little chance off making the cut nowadays, even at 73 (i think he is now) he is still a very fit man and still shoots some great scores but now tend to be two good day scores and two bad days, as long as he wants to play in the open and any other tournement he is aloud to play in then i think he had the right to do so, he is still the most traveled of any tour pro and he has been great forrthe game all over the world. he has also started many a golfer on his way to greatness, just ask some of the younger and older S/A pros what they think of him.

Re: If you're not an American......

What a biased post. Annika Sorenstam gets every shot covered on USA tv. What country is she from? As others have stated, at a professional level this game is played for entertainment dollars. Those players are playing for U.S. dollars, not home country pride.

If your Scottish amateur had been in the top ten going into Saturday, you would have seen all his shots. Television golf is about entertainment dollars, not who "deserves" to be on the big screen.

I don't really think it is a biased post---although I can see where you are coming from. It is all money driven--unfortunately. Which leaves a lot of room for people to have a go at it.

Re: If you're not an American......

Your man Richie is playing with Tiger and Jeff Oglivy tomorrow. He should get plenty of coverage. Hope he plays well.
