How do you get backspin from the bunker

How do you get backspin in the sand? Do you strike the ball first or something else?

Re: How do you get backspin from the bunker

hi
let the loft of the club do the work and the ball will spin up the face of the club and backspin will be applied. open the face a bit more to hit the ball higher and shorter. no need to try and make it happen as the club will do it for you. most shots will come out and bounce once and stop due to the spin on the ball. if you play into an upslope on the green then the ball will spin back. to have the ball hit the green and then spin back you have to play a full shot and have a full follow through to apply that amount of back spin. harder you hit into the back of the ball with a lofted club the more backspin is applied.
my pro told me to forget about trying to get backspin out of the rough and bunkers and concentrate on playing to a spot on the green that i know the ball will land and know how much run i will get from that club. backspin is to hard to control and you never know how far it will spin back. if i have a full shot in a bunker with say a 56% wedge or a half swing with say a 48% wedge i use the 48% wedge as i know how far it will run with the full shot sometime it spins back sometimes it don't.
