Re: Consistant Chipping

I finally for the first time shot par for nine holes on a regulation golf course. I parred the back nine from the middle tees out at Sierra Sage. My shot game was flawless. The whole thing started when i was starting to inquire about hitting short shots through heavy rough. Then I talked to you and also went online at golf-tuition.com. and read these two guyz arguing about how to put backspin on the ball. The one guy said that you have to pinch the ball at impact. Last night I thought I would reference the issue from the Dave Pelz Bible. Page 200. He says that you have to hit the ball below the equator with a descending blow. All of a sudden I started nailing short pitches, chip and runs, and even my short and mid irons. I hit almost every green in regulation and only had 17 putts on the back. You can get such more of a cleaner hit by pinching the ball. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!

Re: Consistant Chipping

I have recently (say last couple of weeks) changed my short game prac regime.

I now have an area marked with 4 tees about a metre square just a foot or two short of the prac pitching/chipping area.

I stand ten metres away from this area and hit 5 balls using 71 through to my 4 wedges.

I don't worry about the result of where the ball rolls out. I only concern myself with the ball first bouncing within the area of the 4 tees. I only have control over where the ball lands.

Getting pretty good at it. My goal will be to land all 5 balls with each iron into the tee'd area before I can walk off. At the moment at least 3 with each iron are landing in the area.

Thought this drill may help someone.

I find that most people put too much emphasis on technique and not enough on the mental aspect of it. You really need to focus on a landing area. Until you can consistantly hit your landing area with your chips, you will never become a good chipper. The roll you get once the ball lands depends on the club selection. Generally on a flat green, with a 56degree, I land the ball 2/3rds to the hole, 1/2 way with a 9/PW, and 1/3rd of the way with my 7iron. In most cases, I try and get the ball rolling on the green as quickly as possible.

Re: Consistant Chipping

Totally correct. Knowing the landing area is 50% of the battle. With me I use the Dave Pelz method of putting the ball back off my right ankle to promote a more downward blow. Therefore the loft on my 60 degree now becomes more like a pitching wedge. From 20 yrds. out, I chip half way to the hole. The farther the chip, or pitch and roll, the more club I take. The only time I hit 2/3rd's the way to the hole is when it's an uphill chip of pitch. Low round of the week...79.

Re: Consistant Chipping

I have noticed a couple of things since doing this. Firstly, more confidence and secondly, becoming more instinctive.

I have had a couple of weeks from playing golf so it will be interesting to see how I get on next week.

Also coming into Summer, it will be most benefical as the bump and run will be the preferred shot close to the green.

Re: Consistant Chipping

Last year, while skimming through short game tips, I came across this chipping technique and wonder if anyone else has.
-Set up (right handed) with ball in front of back (right foot)
most of weight on back foot (right) with arms firmly at your sides to encourage body rotation.
-rotate around hip joint on ball and socket of your right hip as your chipping movement.
-the degree of forward club lean at set up will determine the angle of attack.

I have never had the club head return to it's address position as consistently, as I have with this technique. From there, it's practice with distance control and alignment.
Even though the technique is odd in description, the execution appears normal to the observer and with excellent form, according to our club pro.
Who, by the way, I promptly embarrassed in an impromptu chipping contest after just a couple of practice sessions.
Want to add a little more distance...I did with consistent results by adding a little hinge on the backward rotation. Rotating forward and unhinging, elevates with a dramatic increase in back spin.
Now golf is easy (yuck, yuck) !!!
