hi Neil
i think your so right about the older courses and also the grass used here and it the same with links grass and how it able to take all that salt water as well as fresh. it also seems like the fairways are cut shorter on links that they can be on inland courses.
getting backspin on a links course in sumer when greens are dry is like stoping a ball on a main road. but in winter the take a great deal off water and can stll be firm.
you dont get many links courses flooding as you do with the inland couses.

Bermuda is brutal. It's a very stout grass, a firm blade, and makes a ton of difference whether you're hitting with the grain or against it, especially for putting. On gentle slopes, the grain can actually push the ball uphill.
